DE Douglas Agrees To Terms With Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the verge of adding another defensive end to their team in free agency, agreeing to terms with Marques Douglas, formerly of the 49ers, on a four-year deal. The Bucs also signed DE Jimmy Wilkerson on the first weekend of free agency.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed defensive end Marques Douglas to a four-year deal on Thursday. Douglas becomes the second defensive end to join the team in 2008 as Jimmy Wilkerson became a Buccaneer on March 1.

Douglas originally entered the NFL out of Howard in 2000. He has played for New Orleans, Baltimore and most recently San Francisco, where he's spent the past three seasons.

The 6-foot-2, 292-pound Douglas has notched 299 career tackles, 19 sacks and six forced fumbles. The Bucs could be looking at Douglas as a player that can play both defensive end and defensive tackle in their Cover 2 scheme.

Douglas, 31, who has played in 88 career games, notched three sacks for the 49ers last season. He started 47 of 48 games for San Francisco.

“I enjoyed my time with the 49ers,” Douglas told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. “I played with Bryant Young and Manny Lawson and Derek Smith and Jeff Ulbrich. Those guys love the game the way I love the game. And now I’m going to a team that has Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber and a bunch of other great players who I’m sure love the game, too.”

The signing of Douglas likely means that the Buccaneers will let Kevin Carter go elsewhere. Carter signed a multi-year deal with Tampa Bay last year, but the Bucs released he and veteran defensive end Greg Spires on February 28, the eve of free agency, to avoid paying him a $2 million roster bonus. The 34-year old Carter, who recently visited the Oakland Raiders, had three sacks last year and was scheduled to earn $5.2 million with the Bucs in 2008.

Good news, now we have another player who can relieve the starters. We still need to draft a DLsome where in the first three rounds.

Big Bucs

I agree, I don't know how he is as a player, but he is younger than Kevin Carter and the lack of game changing plays that Carter had last year, I would say this guy has to be an upgrade due to his age. Hopefully some big name players will get cut and we can pick them up.

Congrats on comnig back on 620 this year. Give them hell!

Good pick up. Should be a help. If he can take some preasure of Gaines and get him a chance to run free that would be even better.

GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19 sacks in 88 games? thats LESS than 1 sack a month.... and we signed this guy to a FOUR year deal? He's a scrub.

In light of the fact for some baffling reason Pewter Report is trying to protect the BIG JERK by blocking us from posting comments to the horrible news that Scott will be doing the show again with him next year, I guess this will be my only forum to express my bewilderment on this decision. Steve Duemig flies in the face of everything Pewter Report stands for in striving to be an objective media outlet to the true fans in this city. He lets his personal bias towards members of this organization overshadow his responsibility to the public to strive for reporting the truth. Whenever anyone calls his show with a legitimate point that conflicts with one of his views he takes the whimpy approach of raising his voice and yelling at them without giving the caller a fair opportunity to respond. Of course he tries to change his tone when he does the Buccaneer Blitz to try to come across as being somewhat unbiased. However, his true colors still manage to shine through. We all heard his comments about Pewter Report and our message board. You actually accept this guy's so called apology? I can't understand why Pewter Report would want to team up with a guy like this. That is the worse news I have heard all day.

.......which has nothing to do with the fact that we just added quality depth to the DL with a guy who can play DE and Dt. He will fit nicely into Coyers rotation.

I agree hwaii50.
I don't live in the Tampa Bay Area so I do not know what this is about. I do understand treybucs in your defense that I also don't like it when any radio/tv host over runs someone else opinion. So far Pewter Report is the best consistant news group I have experienced when it comes to information about the Bucs. They are not perfect like all of us and sometimes you have to go along with something even though it's not what you would do. At least you got to put out your points on it.
Go Bucs

As a long time Buccaneer fan I have witnessed a few things:
The Culverhouse days when we had the lowest pay role in the NFL year after year. Then the Glaziers (God Bless the Glaziers’) they gave us the team Tampa Bay wanted. They sat back for a while, let Tony and McKay do there thing and when it was agreed that we wouldn’t get past the 1st round of the play-offs they made a change. It was a careful change; they decided on the West Coast style of offence and hired a coach that could implement it. Thank you. We won a Supper Bowl.

Fast forward a few years. As we embark on another championship season, we are constantly hammered with the negativity from local sports personalities who spread hate, specifically hate of Coach Gruden.
At first I assumed it was a matter of loyalty to the older players but, I since realized what the Big Dogs got his knickers in a bunch about. He hates West Coast offences. He hates players who come from other west coast teams and he hates Gruden. He won’t say that because everyone likes the west coast style and he knows it. The west coast style is a far more exciting and entertaining brand of football.

Steve Dumig’s show is alright except when he puts an 85 year old lady on the air, spouting off about how bad she hates the Coach, no one wants to hear an old lady talking hate.
Or, when he calls a player “a alcoholic Bum” that’s cold and maybe slander.
When he goes on his Gruden rants, it becomes painful to listen, its always the same its never about something factual, just stuff like being two faced to players, stuff that any NFL coach has to do, but you don’t have air the dirty laundry.

Maybe it’s time to change radio personalities, let’s get someone in that at least likes our team, the way the fans do.

Im a Los Angeles based fan,and if it wasnt for Pewter Report i'd know alot less about our team(though my mag always shows up wayyyyy late!).Aside from the factual info provided, this an opinion based site-and we are all intitled to our opinion. Not everything will be positive-get used to it.Im not in the know when it comes to this Dumig character so i'll stay away from him to bring up a little some thing else.
I believe since the Bucs won the superbowl-there has not been a team more influential arround the league than Tampa.Seems like so many teams are now running with the "tampa two" defense-wonder where that came from.We have copycat teams,Raiders(Bucs west),and the Lions(motorcity Bucs). If you have watched the last two off seasons-especially this one ,you will notice that alot of the pick ups for both of those two teams had first caught Tampas eye or been Tampa players?Bruce and Grudens "opinions" must be pretty respected arround this league. They might not be making splashes- but they slowly are building a "title" wave.
Our offense is complex,it takes skills AND smarts to run with it.I think Gruden has relied on vets with set personalities for too long.Though quality vets provide leadership, this youth movement is what we need.It is easier to mold clay when its soft, then after its been fired. If we have a chance to raise quality players within this system we will return to greatness.
As for your problems with the personalities in Tampa,I hope it works out for the best. Most of all-i hope we always have somethin to talk about.

Gee guys, I live in Kentucky but was in St. Pete when the Bucs started. Seems to me if the radoi guy is that slanted I'd be calling every show just to P him off. Of course there are always the SPONSERS who most likely would listen to your complaints.

I do see more respect for Gruden and Tampa outside of Florida on many occasions. In fact I have had people stop me and ask why Gruden stays in a place where he is not appreciated. That being said I have my issues with coach at times as well. But I think I know a good coach when I see one.

I went to RJ last fall for my sons first "HOME" game. Honestly there seemed to be a lack of intensity with manny of the "fans". They should go on the road with us and walk in our shoes, they might appreciate what they have a little more.

Still think this is a positive signing. In fact I like most of what we have "DUNN" so far.

GO BUCS!!!!!!!!
