The Bucs signed five undrafted free agents on Friday. The Bucs' newest players, T Chris Clark, DB Jonathan Hefney, CB Elbert Mack, FB Carl Stewart and TE Tyrice Thompson, will participate in Tampa Bay's three-day rookie mini-camp, which begins today.
The Buccaneers added more players to their roster on Friday, signing five undrafted free agents - tackle Chris Clark (Southern Mississippi), defensive back Jonathan Hefney (Tennessee), cornerback Elbert Mack (Troy), fullback Carl Stewart (Auburn) and tight end Tyrice Thompson (Arizona State).
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Clark was a preseason All-Conference USA selection in 2007. Clark started his final three seasons at tackle for Southern Miss.
A first-team All-SEC pick in 2007, Hefney (5-8, 190) started his collegiate career at cornerback but was moved to safety for his final three seasons at Tennessee. He posted 96 tackles, one interception and six passes defensed as a senior. In addition to his skills on defense, Hefney has return ability. He averaged 8.3 yards per punt return for the Volunteers.
Mack (5-10, 168) joins Hefney and Tampa Bay first-round pick Aqib Talib as the newest additions to the Buccaneers' secondary. While he's considered undersized, Mack posted some big numbers at Troy. As a senior, Mack and one other collegiate player led the nation with eight interceptions, one of which he returned for a score.
Stewart (6-1, 230) is mainly known as a lead blocker at fullback. However, he also carried the ball at Auburn. Stewart rushed the ball 128 times for 482 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 39 passes for 612 yards and two touchdowns in 47 games (12 stats) at Auburn.
Thompson (6-5, 220) is considered undersized to play tight end in the NFL. He caught 15 passes for 272 yards and a touchdowns as a senior at Arizona State. But Thompson made his biggest impact on special teams, blocking a punt and a field goal and recovering a fumble as a senior.
These five undrafted free agents, Tampa Bay's seven picks from the 2008 NFL Draft and a host of try-out players, which will be announced later, will participate in the Buccaneers' three-day rookie mini-camp at One Buccaneer Place. The camp begins on today.
