Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Dexter Jackson was limited for the second straight practice on Sunday. Jackson disclosed that he has a hamstring injury, but believes he'll be ready to go on May 16.
Buccaneers second-round pick, wide receiver Dexter Jackson, was limited in practice on Sunday for the second straight day.
Even after Saturday's practice concluded Jackson's ailment remained a mystery. However, Jackson disclosed on Sunday that he has a pulled hamstring.
"Yeah I tweaked it a little bit the first day," Jackson said of his hamstring. "I've just been trying to get that better so when I come back I can compete."
Sunday Jackson was back in action, but he said that he was limited in what he could do on the field for the final rookie minin-camp workout.
"Really full speed team stuff," said Jackson of what he was limited in doing. "Basically no contact. I was doing just routes and light stuff. It seemed like each day it's getting better. The more I learn the more I can do. Once I get healed up then I can basically just do everything and just be myself."
Jackson did not anticipate a long recovery. He should be ready for the organized team activities he's allowed to participate in, and the team's mandatory mini-camp later in June.
"About maybe three weeks," Jackson said about the time needed to rehabilitate. "By the time I come back I should be ready to go."
While Jackson was limited physically he could still use the mini-camp to grow mentally. Jackson said he learned a lot in the three days of practice. Once he is up to speed on offense he will be able to compete for the starting wide out position opposite Joey Galloway. His competition will largely come from Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall, Ike Hilliard, and Antonio Bryant.
"[I learned] where to line up first. What routes to run," said Jackson of what he learned and the opportunity at receiver. "Once I get that then just let my ability take over. It feels good knowing that nobody has a slot," said Jackson. "Once I learn the offense then I'm just like them and just competing. We're all doing the same thing running around and making plays."
Jackson has his source of inspiration in the receiver that already is a starter for Tampa Bay.
"I feel good just to see Joey's success," Jackson said of Galloway. "He's bigger than me and taller than me, but I feel with his speed and my speed we can really do some things together."
Jackson wasn't the only player limited in Sunday's workout. Seventh-round pick, running back Cory Boyd, was extremely limited due to a left knee injury. Bucs head coach Jon Gruden expects both Boyd and Jackson to be ready to go when organized team activities resume on May 16.
"He's okay," Gruden said of Boyd. "Some of these guys, maybe we're doing a little bit more than they're accustomed to this time of the year. Boyd is fine. Dexter Jackson was limited here. I think they understand they better be ready to go on May 16."
