Bucs LT Luke Petitgout failed Todd Toriscelli's physical. (Reinhold Matay) |
The Buccaneers made an eye-opening move on Saturday when they released veteran left tackle Luke Petitgout, who failed a physical. Donald Penn becomes the Bucs' unquestioned starting left tackle. Tampa Bay signed fullback J.D. Runnels to fill the vacant roster spot.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released last year’s starting left tackle, Luke Petitgout, on Saturday. Petitgout was making a slow recovery from a torn ACL he suffered in the fourth week of the season at Carolina in 2007 and was placed on the active PUP (physically unable to perform) list during training camp. The former New York Giant first-round pick never made it to the practice field and was released from the PUP list due to a failed physical on Saturday.
Petitgout had signed a three-year deal worth $15 million in 2007, including a $3 million signing bonus. The 32-year old left tackle was already paid a $1 million roster bonus back in March.
Third-year veteran Donald Penn now enters the 2008 season as the team’s starting left tackle. Penn started 13 games last year, including the NFC Wild Card game against New York, after Petitgout suffered his knee injury. Petitgout’s release bodes well for veteran Anthony Davis or former practice squad player Dennis Roland, who stand a much better chance of making the Bucs’ 53-man now.
To fill the roster spot created with Petitgout’s departure, the Buccaneers signed fullback J.D. Runnels. Runnels was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. With starting fullback B.J. Askew ailing from a sprained ankle, the Bucs have been in the market for another fullback to join the team along with second-year fullback Byron Storer and rookie Carl Stewart.
The Bucs worked out NFL veteran Lorenzo Neal during training camp, but he opted to sign with Baltimore, which led to the acquisition of Runnels, who played with right guard Davin Joseph at Oklahoma.

i guess that sorts out the OL for this year, Penn-Sears-Faine-Joseph-Trueblood, with Buenning, Davis, and Zuttah as our backups. that's a pretty effective line. but i wouldn't be surprised if the bucs re-sign luke later in the season, and this is just a way to get around having to wait until week 6 to activate him if he returns to health...also opens up a spot for josh johnson on the 53-man, and they can demote him to the PS onces people's rosters are locked in at midseason.

Smart move-now we can keep Johnson safe from the practice squad and maybe bring in a roster casualty from another team...I didn't see Luke P gettin it done this season, too banged up..(remember todd S and derrick D).Too bad we gave him all that money....

Dude, he only had a $3 million signing bonus. That's $10 million less than Donte Stallworth is getting, guaranteed, from Cleveland to be the number 3 receiver.

Lordjim- dont know what Stallworth has to do with the Bucs(thats for Brown fans to worry about),Luke gets 3 mil for not being in playing shape due to injury.I believe he was injured when the team paid him that money. All I'm saying is I'd like a 3mil check for basically nothing...He was a good player in his day, just glad we have some young guns getting it done-where its safe to let a guy like this go....This will give the guys who can play more time in practice...
Now we can hold onto Johnson with no worries....Its a win win...

I think this comment line is open for anyone to make a point. I hate when others criticize someone elses point. Make YOUR point, and be done with it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Comparing one NFL contract to another is a perfectly legit comparison. Its not comparing an NFL contract to an MLB or NHL one. Petitgout was old and injury prone when he came here... but we needed a veteran presence there. I dont think the 3 million was a waste at all. I think he provided Penn with some leadership. Penn did AWESOME last year, he held his own against some of the leagues Best pass rushers! This O LIne is poised to become our best line since Reavis/Horton/Wilson/Roberts/Hannah. If you know what year that line dominated, you know your Bucs football!!

This won't be the only surprise to go. WR is another one that has some older players that are going to have to be cut. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't cut either Garcia, McKnow, or Griese. Simms is an automatic cut already. I am hoping to see more of Johnson now in these preseason games. He should be the third QB on the team. It appears to me that we are going to keep plenty of ground pounders and go light at receivers and maybe ofeensive line.
Go Bucs

Horse- I believe you may be right..We are deep at RB and TE and we have solid pass catchers at these positions-If our WR's continue to aim low they will be all but forgotten.
I would love to see one of our lackluster QB's get cut.People are gonna scream about the depth, but if the depth isnt great-what do we have to lose..I would love to see Johnson for the rest of preseason.Sizzlers still out,Luke is hot and cold, and everyone knows the limitations of Griese's game, why not throw the majority of playing time to Johnson.Dont wait til 3rd stringers are out there, give him a baptism by fire.Put him in for our second series and let him feel some game speed !Its pre season, what do we have to lose ?!He has the skill set we need at the position-lets develop the guy now !!!Next season will be here soon enough and the 3 other QBs might be long gone...Invest in our future coaches, johnson is the future and may be the only QB left on the roster next season-sizzler and griese should hang em up and Luke is a huge question mark...

If our remaining left tackles don't get hurt we should be just fine.

You are stupid.
I'm guessing you didn't graduate from high school. It's a good thing we have intelligent people running the organization and evaluating players like Bruce Allen because if the Bucs actually did some of the crazy stuff that suggested in previous posts then the team would resemble the San Francisco 49ers rather than our current stable team.

After this move I'm no longer comfortable with our depth at LT. What if what happened to Petitgout last year happens to Penn in the 3rd or 4th game. I like A. Davis better as a guard than a LT.

Oh well, good thing Donald Penn turned out to be so good.

I've been saying since they drafted him, that Zuttah should be playing left tackle. Hopefully they move him over there to compete. Buenning has proven to be more than good enough at center and should be the first one off the bench if any of the 3 inside players (Sears, Fain, Joseph) go down. With AD's play last night, they should definitly keep 9 O linemen on the roster, he really didn't look good at all at the left tackle spot.
As for Johnson at QB, I don't think anybody is going to steal the guy off the practice squad. He has a long ways to go.
