Tampa Bay starting right guard Davin Joseph missed practice Tuesday with a broken foot that could keep him out of action for several weeks. The former first-round draft pick could be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie G Jeremy Zuttah or veteran G Dan Buenning.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely will start the 2008 regular season without one of their key contributors along the offensive line.

PewterReport.com has confirmed reports from earlier today that stated Bucs starting right guard Davin Joseph broke his foot during Tampa Bay's 27-10 win over New England on Sunday night and could miss significant playing time.

Joseph was held out of practice on Tuesday, which was the same day the team saw quarterback Jeff Garcia (calf), wide receiver Joey Galloway (groin) and defensive tackle Jovan Haye (groin) return to the practice field.

A former first-round draft pick, Joseph has started 28 of the 29 games he's played during his two-year career. A report in the St. Petersburg Times suggested Joseph had surgery on Monday and could be sidelined 4-8 weeks. The Bucs have not disclosed how much playing time their starting right guard is expected to miss.

Joseph missed the 2006 regular season opener due to a knee injury he sustained in practice that year.

The Bucs likely will play rookie Jeremy Zuttah in place of Joseph. Zuttah, a third-round draft pick out of Rutgers, has seen significant playing time at guard and center in training camp and preseason. The team could also consider playing C/G Dan Buenning in Zuttah's place. Buenning has started 23 games at left guard since entering the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick in 2005.

Really bad news for this promising season for the OL....

Drafting Zuttah in the 3rd round doesn't look like a bad move now. Definantly going to miss Joesph. I was looking forward to our young line putting it all together this year. Time for Zuttah to step up.

If you haven't got it yet that injuries happen then be dramatic. I am concerned with Garcia, since Coach Gruden somehow keeps hoping that Garcia will still be the QB from last year and that he will come end at the end of preseason (even though he hasn't praticed and played in a game yet) and go from there and take us to the super bowl. People it is all about being healthy and praticing with your team.
We are in trouble at QB. We were in trouble at the end of last year regular season games. That's why we were beaten by 3 out of the last 4 games we played. We did not address the QB issue draft time and many of you pretended that we really did not have a problem. WE HAVE A PROBLEM! Do you get it Now!

Horse, the next time you have a thought, let it go. We have at least two backup QB's that have won for us and will win again if necessary.

Regarding the OL, we have depth and we drafted for more. Whether it's Buenning or Zuttah we should be at least in OK shape. Not as good as having Joseph in there but he's the starter, so it makes sense that there would be a slight dropoff.

Not so sure why your panties are in a wad...

I think the o-line will be fine. Let us not forget what a great job Buenning did before he got hurt. He should start over the rookie, because he has experience. If they go with Zuttah, he will be between two good lineman and that will help him out. I would be more concerned if the injury came to Penn or Trueblood.

Did I say that we had a problem with the offensive Line? We don't have a problem. We have real depth at that position .Do you really think Luke or Brian will take us to the Superbowl if Garcia is not healthy? You may call it panites leilin0304, maybe you wear them but I don't .I do understand that our bottoms might be exposed and we better cover them up with something that is real. Panites aren't the answer; how about real pants.

Horse- you say we didn't adress the QB position in the draft (which I won't argue, even though i like Johnson) but then you talk about the super bowl. Do you honestly think that Brian Brohm or any QB we could have drafted would give us a better shot at the super bowl than Griese or McCown? I can understand if you are talking about the future, but it sounds like you are talking about this season.

I have to stick up for horse. Don't fool yourselves-Qb is still a very shaky position for us. Garcia is yet to be back from a "strain" which happened about a month or so ago,and he is still slow to fully recover. Brian Griese though serviceable is not the answer either. His dink and dunk, checkdown style is easy to pick apart once its clear to defenses that its being marginally successful. Its easy to shut down period. Then its future boy McCown who has been given many opportunities yet has done very little with them.He still makes bonehead errors and his judgement is questionable. Can these guys play? Yes they can get it done, but not consistently.Garcia's physical health will always be in question,Griese throws pick if he is made to look down field, and McCown is hot and cold...we have an incredible backfield that will help each one of these flawed QB's,but they alone cant get it done..
There were no answers in the draft that would have gotten us where we are pushing to go,and other than favre-there were ZERO free agents who could have done it..Our offense is complex and takes time to learn, though flawed the three QB's we have are best suited for our needs..None of them are franchise QB's,but the are serviceable.Lets start a new trend in football-QB by committee ! Use the player who can best exploit the weaknesses of whichever defense we face.Keep them guessing, make them prepare for three QB's and not just one..Start the first half with Garcia and finish with McCown-or start Griese and finish with Garcia, make our weakness into a strength.....

I agree with Horse too. I think I'm more worried about QB next year. It's apparent that Garcia can't start 16 games. Maybe 10. What will that be next year? All the reasons there was no player we could bring in this year to improve at QB will still be there next year. No rookie can lead you to the Super Bowl...it is near impossible. Where will we be next year. I like Luke but I'm not sold yet. I hope we figure out a long term plan soon.

I'm really upset that Joseph broke his foot too. He's been so promising. 4-8 weeks is a LONG time in the NFL. He could miss 6 games and then he could be out of shape. This is a tough loss. Thank goodness for our depth...we're not deep anymore. 1 more injury on our OL and we'll be doomed to 2 TE and 2 RB's in the back field every play. (Might be a good thing anyway)

Somebody help me out. What do we have at the LT position after Penn. Zuttah is versitle but he can't play more than 1 position at a time! Is Davis really our backup?

I still feel great about where we're headed. We can win without a Pro Bowl guard for a few weeks. Wish we had him for New Orleans though.

epcolson,
I believe the back-up LT would be Anthony Davis.

This is obviously not good news, but I'm cool with either Zuttah or Buenning coming in. When Petitgout went down last season Penn stepped in big and I think it's fair to say both Zuttah and Buenning are considered to have a lot more upside than Penn did in Week 4 when he started.

Garcia needs reps but I'm not gonna claim it's season threatening like some of you. It's a long season and we won the division with nine wins last year...

Guys, I gotta agree with Horse also, the OL is deep enough to sustain this hit, but without Garcia at 100%, we're in trouble. The thing that concerns me about Jeff is not so much his health, it's his mental status. Not getting a new contract, all the crap with Favre, you gotta wonder where his head is right now. Is he gonna fight to get that extra yard or so, or is he feeling not wanted. I know he's a professional and thats not supposed to matter, but i'm really concerned.

Somebody tell me he's gonna be all right!!!!!!!

I am not saying that drafting a QB in the 1st or 2nd Rd would have put us in the superbowl, but at we would have had a third QB who could have played in a couple games in a bind. I like Cremdonado suggestion of playing multiple QB's to keep them guessing since none of ours will take us to the superbowl. What i said before the draft and after the draft, our weakest position was QB, then DL. If we couldn't have draft them then I was okay with signing someone in free agency even if it was going to be costly. We didn't though at either position. There is no need to put Garcia in the game if he is not completely healthy. He's 38 and slow to heal. Nope we did not address the QB in the off season ,unless you want to say we did with Griese which I believe was just a roosterQB filler. I am not cutting the Bucs. I love my Bucs. I am just saying that I am disappointed in the way we handled the most important position which is QB. Even if Garcia will somehow stay healthy we have really gambled and we have no QB on the team that we can say "he's a rookie, but wait untill next year, he's our fututre".
Johnson is a huge huge gamble and may even not make the team next year if he doesn't improve. He has a lot to learn and I am not talking about the play book.

I can't believe what I'm hearing! Assuming that every team will carry no more than 3 QB's on their roster I believe the Bucs have the best QB core from top to bottom in the league. The ceiling isn't that high at the top since no one is saying that Garcia is the greatest, but am I the only one who saw that Bucs vs. Patriots game? Griese and McCown looked sharp; way sharper than the other backups I've seen in preseason. I also saw three training camp practices in person (Aug. 1-3) and Griese and McCown looked great then also.

I'm starting to think there's no pleasing some of you guys. These guys had something like two incompletions between them against the team of the decade and they still make for a lousy QB core? The same guys that have all played well for the Bucs at one point or another? Some of you guys just can't see the forest for the trees...

tjones

I agree pinkstob.what have they done wrong in preseason no turn overs god how awfull our QBs are.

1:44pm, August 20, 2008

Horse

Well pinkstob & tjones, I guess we are not allowed to express our concerns because it might sound negative so don't talk about anything. It's preseason! Look beyond our stats for these first two games. Did DL have sacks or pressure against their starting OL, how many passes were dink passes versus real 10-20 yard completions, do we feel like we are in the groove with our rhythm on the DL/OL, what QB's did our Defense face that were real starters.
This is my concerns. This not negative. I hope we get a opportunity in the last two games to show where we really are and what we are going to be able to do once the real season begins. I want us to win every game and win the superbowl.
Go Bucs
