Bucs To Interview Zampese For OC Job

Tampa Bay is interviewing several candidates for its offensive coordinator position, including Ken Zampese, who has spent the past six seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals' quarterbacks coach. Zampese, who is the son of longtime NFL offensive coordinator Ernie Zampese, is scheduled to interview with the Bucs next week.

With Jim Bates being named Tampa Bay's new defensive coordinator on Thursday, the Buccaneers were able to turn their attention to filling the vacancy at their offensive coordinator spot.

The Bucs interviewed candidates for both coordinator jobs in Mobile, Alabama earlier this week, but some candidates will meet with Tampa Bay over the next several days.

New Bucs head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Mark Dominik have been coy in their coaching search, but PewterReport.com has learned Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese is scheduled to interview for Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator job early next week.

Zampese, 41, has spent the past six seasons as Cincinnati's quarterbacks coach. He is the son of longtime NFL offensive coordinator Ernie Zampese, who served as offensive coordinator for the 1995 Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys.

Before he joined Cincinnati, Ken Zampese served as an offensive assistant with the St. Louis Rams in 2000 and was promoted to wide receivers coach in 2001. That year, the Rams led the league in passing yards for the second consecutive year. In his final year with the Rams, Zampese earned an additional title, passing game coach, and the Rams finished the '02 season ranked second in the league with 259.6 yards passing per game.

A former wide receiver return specialist at the University of San Diego, Zampese first embarked on his NFL coaching career in 1998 as an offensive assistant with the Eagles, working under then-head coach Ray Rhodes. He worked with Rhodes for one year in Philadelphia and Green Bay (1999) before joining St. Louis and eventually Cincinnati.

Zampese has spent five of his six seasons in Cincinnati working with one of the league's most efficient passers, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, a former first-round pick who became the fifth quarterback in the history of the NFL to throw 100 career touchdown passes in his first 59 games. The quickest to 100 TD throws was former Miami QB Dan Marino, who accomplished that feat in 44 contests.

Under the guidance of Zampese, Palmer also holds Bengals records for completion percentage (64.1), passer rating (90.1), single-season TD passes (32) and single-season passer rating (101.5).

Palmer isn't the only quarterback Zampese helped succeed in Cincinnati. In his first season with the Bengals (2003), Zampese worked closely with Jon Kitna, who completed 324 passes (62.3 percent) for 3,591 yards and tossed 26 touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 87.4.

In addition to Zampese, the Bucs are also interested in talking to former Rams head coach Scott Linehan and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey about their vacant offensive coordinator post.

If he gets the job, I hope he can pick talented coaches. We are definitely getting younger.
Beware "all ye over 30 years old players"!

We all be walk'n da plank...inexperienced GM, Head Coach, and OC. Kenny Z may bring some skills, but it,s different when you are calling all the shots!!

At least our draft picks are going to get higher, after next year we could have a top 5 pick.

I wish they would refund season ticket money when they set fire to a team.

I'm sure Ravens fans said the same thing when Harbaugh was hired. Give'em a chance before you jump off the bandwagon.

Bringing a QB coach in to run the offense may be a sign that the Bucs will attempt to field a QB based attack...so who do they get in FA? Surely they will wait until next year to draft a QB when the talent is deeper.

I've heard few rumors about Matt Leinart being traded to the Vikings. If he's up for grabs I see us making a serious play for him. I'm not sure how he would pan out but it's better than going with Griese. I agree we can't draft a QB this year. I question even the top two and next year will not only be much deeper but we will probably have a higher pick as well.

I don't want anything out of Cincy.

Carson Palmer was the #1 pick out of college, and expected to be a stud. I think he would have been good no matter who his QB coach was.

How did Zampese do with a mediocre talent QB, like the Bucs have? Oh yeah, they went 4-11-1 with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB.

D-coordinator from the fierce Broncos and now a O-coordinator from the fearless Bengals or college. I'm glad you got rid of a S-B winning coach for this. Yes, We're a lot better now, anyone can see that. Maybe DUImeg could be our offensive guy to help our baby coach.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm really excited about our new regime. Everybody seems to think that we are going to collapse this coming year, although our coaching staff is undergoing a complete rebuild, our team is not. We still have a very talented group of veterans and newer players that just need a good shot in the arm and this new staff just might be the ones to give it to them.

If you say that your a true Bucs fan, support your team!

adam1979tpa - Big difference between what we have and what both the Ravens and Steelers have in terms of organization and coaching. Two legends as defensive coordinators make life alittle easier as well.

gqstv68 - Nothing wrong with having hope, as anyone who's read my stuff over the past couple years can attest to that. But give me one reason to be optimistic? One reason...There's nothing you can point at specifically...You can make up stuff and talk about Gruden's struggles and this and that, but nothing leads me to believe at this point it's going to get better. These guys have ZERO experience and I'm not sold as others are that Raheem Morris will make a great coach. Time will tell, but I have never agreed with the move.

I'm standing outside the window on the same side of the fence scratching my head, or I should say, pulling my hair out with Bucfan47 and the others who are bewildered by the Morris decision. Let me be the first to say that I truly hope he proves me wrong the way Gruden proved his critics wrong by winning two division titles in 05 and 07 when the overwhelming consensus was we would be the doormats of the division. That being said, the more and more I try to look at this decision objectively, the stronger my sentiments are in concluding that Morris has done absolutely NOTHING to deserve being a head coach in this league and don't tell me he is because he knows "how to communicate" with his players. If you remember correctly, just about all of the Giants players were calling for Tom Coughlin to be fired before the 2007 season for pretty much the same reasons that people were calling for Jon to be fired. Thankfully for the Giants, Jerry Reece and the Giants front office were smart enough to realize what was in the best interest of their organization. You obviously don't need to read in between the lines to see I wasn't in favor of a coaching change to begin with, but let's assume for this discussion that a change was needed and focus on the process the Glazers went through to make sure they were hiring the right person for what everyone admits is the biggest decision a franchise has to make. They are so sure Morris is the right guy that they interview no one as part of the decision making process. So sure that they let him interview among three candidates for the Denver job. Same thing holds true for Dominik with KC. What if they had been hired? What would that have done to the Glazers so called crystal clear plan for the future?
Someone please tell me what it is that Morris accomplished as our secondary coach that makes him such a clear choice for this position that you justify not even interviewing anyone else. After all, isn't this the same secondary coach who couldn't even instruct his unit that with 10 minutes left in the 4th quater against Oakland and a 10 point lead whatever you do don't get beat deep on the big play. They run a halfback pass and their's not even a defender within 20 yards of the receiver when the ball was thrown. Shouldn't he atleast share some of the responsibility for failing to have his unit prepared. This is the same guy who gets rewarded by being hired as head coach without a single interview? I'm not buying into the notion that ownership's motives were altruistic until they makes a serious run at some free agents this offseason and this guy shows what he has to deserve being a head coach in this league.

Since we are all fans and not directly decision makers for the Buccaneers and the moves have been made, stop whining about the firing and hiring, it's done! i heard the same (and i was one of them) complaints when Dungy was let go and we we're snubbed by Parcells. we gave an arm and a leg for Gruden with the thought that he would bring our offense up to speed with our championship ready defense. So we got a championship (not a dominant offense, defense won that trophy)....Dungy took us from doormats to contender...fired...Gruden from contender to Champions to wtf!?...fired, no we've moved on to an unproven up and coming HC and GM, give it a chance or root for someone else. what's done is done and the only thing we as fans can do is hope for the best in the future. i'm not invited to any board rooms where decisions and strategies are being made concerning the Bucs personnel...are any of you naysayers??? Dominik is the GM, Morris is the HC and Bates is the DC, trust in these guys to surround themselves with smart people (much like Tomlin did in Pitt after being hired young and 1 season at DC) and to take our team to better days. whomever is hired as OC, i'm on board with them until they are PROVEN idiots, no matter if they were a QB coach at their last position or the inventor of the forward pass, i'll give them a chance.
And no matter who is calling the shots, if we don't get in a few probowl caliber free agents and a good draft...we're doomed before training camp anyway.

GO BUCS!!!! Either get on the Pirate ship or back away from the dock cause we're moving on!!!

antwion69,
While it appears your philosophy in being a fan is to sit back like a puppet and give complete deference to ownerships decisions no matter what facts suggest otherwise, don't try to imply that others who present facts as the basis of concern about the reasoning behind the decision aren't as much of a fan as you. If you want to discuss the facts that you believe make this a quality decision, I am more than happy to sit back and listen to you. Otherwise, I've been bleeding red and pewter long enough that I don't need you to tell me who to root for.

Hey all you Gruden lovers-give it a f@ckin rest !!

All the Morris bashing is ridiculous,he has yet to really do anything. His coaching staff is under construction and he has yet to coach his first practice-yet some of you are already trying to run him outta town.Give the situation so time to evolve, then pass your judgement.Morris didnt TAKE Gru's job-Gru LOST it.The Glazers went for an inside guy.I believe the problems in our locker room were greatly understated and the Glazers thought bringing in a players coach was the right move. Our team was greatly destabilized by Kiff's departure and bringing in another celebrity coach might have further stressed a divided locker room.I believe this had a lot to do with the choice. Players at the end werent playing for Gru,hopefully these same guys will play for Heem.
Im sorry some of you feel wronged by the team for letting Gruden go,but it was time. This team needs a new direction and a new outlook.Time will tell if Heem was at least a good choice. But as the Dungy backers were told to give Gru a chance,I think the same has to happen for Morris.

Nothing is forever.Change is good.allow things a chance before you doom it to fail..
If we tank this season-you guys saw it coming, congratulations !
if we don't,I hope you like the taste of crow..

Remember that tanking this season will bring us a franchise QB in next years draft..So losing with Morris is still a win...

I'm excited....about change......Gruden 53-50, with one of the top Defence's in the league over the last 6 years and the O players and the Glazer's were sick of His crap. There's more excitement in this change then the same old crap that Gruden was putting out. It's just time for change even if we back up some as a team (which i doubt we will be much worse than a team that has not won a playoff game in 6 years) we will get better......and that's exciting....Thank's Glazer's for daring to try to get better as a team and franchise.......GO BUCS...
I will be excited about next year instead of whine about maybe not being good ....thats stupid.
This might be the best thing that ever happened to the BUCS
and until it fails (which i dont believe we will be worse than a 500. team....like Gruden's record) i'm gonna love every minute of it......Dont Worry.....Be Happy...........GO BUCS..!!!.

trebucs.....Tom Coughlin was just hard on his players and that you can change like he did, almost cost him his job but Gruden treat's players like sh%t and lie's to them and that's a personality problem that your not gonna just change over night.
Almost every single Off player that has ever played for Gruden here has not had much good to say about and most of them have had alot more bad to say about him.The only Off players that havent said anything bad about Gruden are few and are the type of people that wont say anything bad about ANYBODY.Put down the "Gruden rose colored glass's" and start seeing what 95% of ALL BUC FANS have been seeing.
The amazing 53-50 coach is gone....get over it.

treybucs-

puppet...lol, i think not. if you read my rant again you'll see that i simply said that the decision has been made, morris and dominik are piloting this ship and lets (fans) move on past the whining about the decision and give them a chance because basically there's nothing that can be done about it through whining weeks later. actually when the story broke about the firing of gruden (which i was a fan of) my first reaction was to go after a bill cowher or high profile coach, i was a bit puzzled by hiring morris without him having experience at even the coordinator position, but after giving a couple days to sink in, it makes more sense to me and i'm going to give the change a chance as a fan. if i've learned anything from my 13 yrs in the Army, its this...some decisions, courses of action or plans i can influence, some i can't and after i've given my 2 cents to the decision makers and they go another way, i have to salute and move out no matter how much i disagree. i don't agree with our military still being in iraq or afghan, but i'll be heading back over there to do my job in march for the 2nd time. at the end of the day none of us fans were in the decision making process for the firing or hiring and if the Bucs are our team this is the new regime and lets give them our support and a chance to prevail or fail. i'll be the first one to ask wtf, if come this december, we are in last place in the division and nowhere close to the playoffs (even though i think with the current roster problems and coaching changes it will take at least 2 offseasons to right this ship). imo the day of retread, high priced coaches are over and more owners are attempting to give fresh talent and minds a chance. worked for the likes of the steelers, cards, falcons, ravens and dolphins (didn't hurt to have good coordinators either)

you may have bled pewter and red for a while, but i grew up in Pasco county (if you don't know where that is then you're obviously not from around the tampa area) and i attended USF prior to the military and i've bled creamsicle orange and red transitioned into pewter and red and lived a disappointed fans life growing up to see the Bucs get to where they are. If you're a supporter...support!

Getting rid of Gruden will be very beneficial. A couple months back there was a poll on ESPN given to NFL players about what coaches they would most and would most least want to play for. Gruden was in the top 5 for coaches players would least want to play for. Therefore i believe hiring Morris, a more player-liked coach will bring us in some star free agents. We have a lot of cap and we need to start capitalizing on big free agents.

Lets get it straight so called Bucs fans. Gruden/Allen were poor evaluators/developers of talent. Gruden was too enamored with flashy things. Who do you think he drafted, Carnell Williams or "Cadillac" Williams ??? Why do you think Keyshawn called him a "used car salesman"???? The man spoke out both sides of his neck just ask Alstott&Sapp.Name one offensive playmaker we have he drafted that he has developed. He had a good hard running back who was the heart of this offense for years(Alstott) but refused to use him! Why???Because his designation was full back & they're supposed to block. Don't matter how much game tape showed this fool that #40 time & time again picked this team up on his back & willed them to win!!!Galloway is dressed & on the sidelines but doesn't play because why???He plays the same position as Bryant!!! Do you think Coach Bellichick would have Joey riding pine??He would have had both playmakers out there! Difference between great & mediocre coach!Offensive guru ? Please!!! More like OFFENSIVE!!!! I don't care what anybody says, Luke McCown has more talent & athletic ability than Garterbelt & Greasyformula together. Given the chance he would have learned. The man has a crazy arm , accuracy & mobility but Gruden refused to use him.
He is hard headed to a fault & his ego too big. Goes with his game plan no matter if it's not working. Its his way or the highway.Bad news about that is too many good players have hit the highway to play well for other teams. So just like it was like time for Dungy to go(I hated it at first ) its time for Gruden and I'm not unhappy about that. So now Morris gets to mold this team into his own image!! Don't forget how many of you mere crying the blueswhen Dungy was first hired. Look what he helped turn the Bucs into!
