Tampa Bay is expected to fill its vacant defensive backs coaching job by hiring former Denver linebackers coach Joe Baker. Baker spent two seasons with Denver, one of which was with new Bucs defensive coordinator Jim Bates.
Baker, 39, spent the past two seasons serving as Denver's linebackers coach. He spent two seasons (2007-08) with the Broncos, the first of which was with Jim Bates, who was recently hired as Tampa Bay's new defensive coordinator. Baker and several other Broncos assistants were fired with former head coach Mike Shanahan earlier this month.
Before he was hired in Denver, Baker worked with St. Louis (2006), Green Bay (2005), New Orleans (2000-04) and Jacksonville (1994-98).
Baker fills a position that was overseen by Raheem Morris over the past two seasons before he was promoted to defensive coordinator for one month and then to head coach on Jan. 17.
Tampa Bay's current defensive coaching staff under Bates features Todd Wash (defensive line coach), Joe Barry (linebackers coach) and Joe Baker (defensive backs coach). The only coaching position that remains unfilled in Tampa Bay is the defensive quality control coach job.

Can anyone tell me if this guy has ever even coached DB's before?? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the Bates hire!!! I was hoping for some experienced coordinators to go along with Raheem as coach. I'm also pretty sure that Bates would not bring this guy in if he was not an excellent coach. I just wonder if he has done only LB;s or if he has any other defensive experience. I am also pretty sure that Raheem has to at least like this guy on paper, or he would not let him touch his precious DB's. Raheem has worked too hard in turning those guys back into a strength of the team to let just anyone coach them.
PLEASE bring me an experienced OC soon. We need to know what we are scouting for and we need to start the evaluation process on who we think we should keep and who we need to go after in the FA period! Hopefully, if we are waiting on Chan Gailey, he will actually sign with us and not some other team. I am a little worried that if we wait for Gailey, as some other teams seem to be doing also, that there will be no one left when he goes elsewhere. Maybe that's why we are interviewing some of these other more obscure, less experienced coaches. That could be our back-up plan if we do not land Gailey. GOOD LUCK Bucs ! ! ! ! !
