Bucs In Pursuit of Vilma, Lose Out On Haynesworth

UPDATED: The Bucs are attempting to persuade LB Jonathan Vilma to visit Tampa Bay, even though New Orleans is trying to re-sign him. Tampa Bay was in the mix for Titans DT Albert Haynesworth, but finished second to Washington, which paid him $100 million over seven years, including $41 million in guaranteed money.

Even though the Saints are furiously trying to lure Jonathan Vilma back to New Orleans, Tampa Bay is trying to set up a free agent visit with the 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker. Vilma was acquired last year by the Saints in a trade with the Jets.

Vilma had a great year for the Saints, recording 132 tackles, according to NFL.com, along with two forced fumbles, one sack and one interception. Vilma has 465 tackles, 25 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles, seven interceptions and 3.5 sacks in his career. The Bucs are courting him as an outside linebacker who would play next to middle linebacker Barrett Ruud.

Vilma has only missed nine games in his five-year NFL career, those coming during the 2007 season when he suffered a knee injury. Of the 71 games he’s played in, Vilma has started 69 of those contests.

According to ESPN.com, Tampa Bay finished second in the running for Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to Washington, which paid Haynesworth $100 million over seven years, including $41 million in guaranteed money. The Bucs had made landing Haynesworth a top priority, according to a source.

The Bucs have also expressed "sincere" interest in Pittsburgh free agent wide receiver Nate Washington, according to his agent. However, Washington is not scheduled to visit with the Bucs yet. He is scheduled to visit the Detroit Lions.

No doubt stealing Vilma would be a serious slap to the face of the Saints brass but a greater slap to the Bucs brass would be paying a DT $14-$16M annum is absolutely unheralded. I think the supposed star power justification many try to use in this case is not valid. It is not like is a community figure or spokeperson for NFL/or team for that account. Don't do it Tampa...We will regret it when week 14 comes and he is holding his oxygen or dressed in street clothes...

Do it, but do it within reason. The bucs have a history or unlikely to be earned incentives. Give him 10 mill a year in guarantees and base salary. The another six in bonuses. More then that is too risky. Honestly I think they should do it at whatever his market value is. I'm not a Haynesworth fan myself, he could make or break this regime. The thing is, he's a proven pro bowl level player every year, the next best thing in free agency for the Bucs is Igor Olshansky. He's been a 3-4 DE, but has the size and stoutness again the run to play in this new head up system Bates is using.

100-115 million Haynesworth to Skins!!!!
That was too steep, but what do the Bucs do now at DT? Hope they get Vilma.

Did you guys really think those cheap SOB'S would fork out the money??? I knew we weren't going to get him. The Glazers are going to go bargin bin shopping again and keep all the money for Manchester United!!!!

I am so pissed off right now. Do we even have anyone scheduled to come for a visit?

It's no surprise after seeing Dominick and Morris with a deer in the headlights look during the media conference the other day. These clowns dont know what the hell they are doing!

Chris Canty should be tops on our list now, with Haynesworth most likely gone. Notice that Washington has him scheduled for a visit today. If they sign Haynesworth, they won't be able to sign Canty, but they aren't taking any chances their working both of them. Buc's should divert Canty's plane to Tampa.

I am glad he went to Washington for that ransom. I am also happy that we did not pay that for a player that is oft-injured and that is not even an every down DT. Do you realize how much of a salary strain that this places on the Skins after signing Hall and guaranteeing $22M/$41M for Haynesworth in the first year? I love it because the old ad states that you cannot buy a Championship and the old Skins are back at it. Which really limits how much better overall this team can get with an aging RB and O-Line/D-Line and LBs. They deserve it and at the end of the day it comes down to coaching and qb play. Ask yourself what did the titans do with him last year? Sure they made it to the divisional round but what held them back at the end of the day? QB PLAY and Haynesworth wasn't even on the field. You go and pay someone $100M for that and lets see how long you will be in your respected position as a decision maker.
The Bucs can still draft a young massive DT and it cost less and stay with the young movement and still be a big player in free agency for years to come rather than face the uncapped year hell that many teams are going to have to deal with in resigning their own players. The Bucs were in the final two but to offer more than what Washington would be improper business. Stars are born and he is NOT a seat packer or icon, so relax the Bucs can still improve their overall roster by adding Vilma, Washington, McFadden, and Ward. Have a great draft and we are off to the races to rebuilding.

Thanks,

Well for better or forse Haynesworth is not a Buc. Persoanlly I think the Redskins are idiots and overpaid as always. I'm glad we didn't pay him that much....but what now?

If we don't get Vilma or Bart Scott, I think I'll puke.

Chill out people! Do you really think he is going to live up to a 7 yr 100 mil contract? He is already injury prone and does not have a constant motor. What happens when he is 32 yrs old and still has 3 yrs left on his contract??? Washington is in cap jail! He's not worth it!

We heard that this was all but done early in the week. Sounds like tampering to me!

I actually thought we were going to get Haynesworth. Dammit! I agree he wasn't worth that price though. In this economy, I don't know why Snyder would give any player $41 million dollars guaranteed. What an idiot; I hope Snyder goes bankrupt somehow.

just because you have money you don't have to give it away the nfl is already giiving money to teams that can't compete with teams that got it as for M anchester United they have always had rich because of Manchester City both from the same city so i'am glad we didn't that kind of money to Haynesworth. Alot of F/A will fine themselves retired are playing for the .The teams are going young so therefore they less.

Im glad as Hell we didn't get Hanesworth. Signing him and losing Brooks isn't going to determine if I am still a fan. I will be a fan till the day I die and you just have to hope they know what they are doing. They tried, give them credit. Every team wanted him and to finish second says something about their commitment. He was not worth the money and the risk. That leaves a lot of money to get most everyone else we want and tie up our own players for years to come. But seriously, if we don't at least go after someone like Derrick Ward I will be pissed, still a fan, but pissed. I really hope they still come away with 5-6 guys in FA now. Ward, Washington, Vilma, a QB, resign Stevens, P-Buc, and anyone else that is worth the money. Come on Bucs make us proud...

These fools have the most money and still lose out on the only player that would actually make a difference. We will suck for years to come. Jonathan Vilma is would be the worst pickup for us. Last time I checked Vilma is not a game changer. I guess we really want that first pick in the draft.
THE GOOD OLE' DAYS ARE OVER!

We gave Gaines 48 million guareenteed and people think giving a real football player 41 is crazy. I'm with the group that is watching the ship go down.

You were fooling yourselves if you though Haynesworth was coming here. What top notch free agent wants to come here with the entire team in a transition. All new coaches and schemes. Too much turmoil to lure any quality FA. We will be signing on the cheap this year. Maybe we can find some help in FA but i highly doubt it. It will be a long year.
Calm down everyone. We never had a chance at Haynesworth.
Maybe Washington will let Taylor go now and we can get a nice stopgap on the DL for a year.

We actually were willing to give him more that the skins did. hopefully we can land some more talent. Washington, Vilma, Derrick Ward, L.J. Smith. We can get bigger in the draft. Ron Brace in the 2nd round. Robert Ayers in the 3rd round. Mike Wallace in the 4th. Percy Harvin in the 1st . Yes he is smaller, some say fragile. But he demands attention on every play. That would free up Bryant, who we can now sign a big deal with. And we can line harvin up at RB or in the slot too. So dangerous. I think we should make a run at Pat White. Maybe try to get him and Josh Johnson on the field at the same time. Wild Buc here we come. : )

Adam Schefter was just on Sirius.. and said he heard Tampa's offer was higher than Washington's .. He just chose the Redskins..

So you all can drop all this talk that Tampa aren't players in this free agency period

Free agents Johnathan Vilma, Michael Boley, and Derrick Ward (or Cedric Benson).

Draft English and Brace.

We were not going to be able to out bid Dan Schneider for Fat Albert. So let's spend the money we saved on the above FAs and others (a WR).
