The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used their third-round pick to draft Texas defensive tackle Roy Miller on Sunday. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound Miller adds a big body and exceptional run-stuffing ability to Tampa Bay’s defensive line. He recorded 138 tackles and 10 sacks in 19 starts at Texas.

The Buccaneers used their third-round pick (No. 81 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft to select Texas defensive tackle Roy Miller on Sunday.

“I’m excited. Definitely very excited to be a part of that organization,” Miller said. “They’ve had some great players come through there – some great defensive players. Going into this whole thing, I interviewed with them at the Shrine Bowl and I didn’t come in for a visit, so I didn’t really have any idea that they would pick me.”

The 6-foot-1, 310-pound Miller adds a big body and exceptional run-stuffing ability to Tampa Bay’s defensive line under new defensive coordinator Jim Bates. But Miller doesn't necessarily agree with the run-stuffing label he's been given by some scouts.

“Last year, I had [5.5] sacks and 30 quarterback hits,” Miller said. “I am definitely a run stopper, but I think I get after the pass pretty well, too. I take pride in doing both well. I want to be able to show that.”

The defensive tackles in Bates’ scheme are required to take up room and take on blocks to free up the defensive ends, and Miller, who played as light as 290 pounds and as heavy as 315 pounds, has the attributes to do that.

Miller, 21, displays impressive upper-body strength. He did 36 reps of 225 pounds at the combine and has a bench press of 500 pounds. Miller ran a 4.80 time in the 40-yard dash at his pro day workout, squatted 625 pounds and power cleaned 365 pounds.

In addition to some pundits labeling him a run stuffer, Miller was also knocked for his arm length (33 inches), or lack thereof.

“You read [the scouting reports] and definitely it pisses you off," said Miller. "Everybody has an opinion. I take a lot of pride. I’m honored to be a Buc, but I feel there were a lot of guys that went ahead of me that shouldn’t have. Those kinds of things I feed off when I play. It is what is.”

He joins a stable of defensive tackles that includes Ryan Sims, Chris Hovan, Dre Moore, Greg Peterson and Chris Bradwell.

Miller started 19 of the 49 games he played in for Texas. He recorded 138 tackles, 10 sacks, 44 pressures, six passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during his four-year collegiate career.

As a senior, Miller earned first-team All-Big 12 honors by notching 49 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. He also was named the defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl vs. Ohio State.

Seven defensive tackles were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft before the Bucs took Miller in the third round on Sunday. Miller is looking forward to proving his critics wrong as a Buccaneer.

“To me, I feel like I’m the best defensive tackle in the draft,” said Miller. “Watching everybody come off the board, [is motivation], I knew a couple of guys were going to go based on the hype that they got, but I yeah I watched. Like I said before those kinds of things push me. I’ll feed off of them.”

excellent pick. i was afraid they would go wr but this new regime obviously knows positional value. it starts up front and we desperately needed help there. he was the highest rated d-lineman on their board and fits this scheme perfectly.

My knee-jerk reaction is I like this pick. I just read some of his history from other sites and he seems to fit our new defense.

I agree we should target a CB or DE next. I personally would love to land Mike Mickens.

Solid DT - actually surprised still available mid-3rd. Now 1 of 3 holes on D have been addressed. The rest will be a crap shoot.

Need to pressure the QB, need Man corners...

11:50am, April 26, 2009

lazyjake

All you people whinning about the Bucs ignoring the D need to chill. Just because they draft a QB in first they all act like the D will suck and there were no more players availible because we passed on Ayers and Jerry. Both of which werent good fits.

The Bucs know more than we will ever know.

Absolutely great pick!!!!!!!! He was rated by most people only behing Raji and Brace. Exceptionally strong and a great interior lineman. I agree, hope they can get a strong DB in the next round. If Mickens is gone, Murphy would also look good in Pewter.

11:57am, April 26, 2009

Rulon Davis, Zach Potter, or Pannel Egboh in the 4th please.

11:59am, April 26, 2009

BuccanAy

If we'd of take Everette Brown in the 1st, we actually could've been competitive this year.

12:05pm, April 26, 2009

....or Donald Washington.

12:08pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

What about 3rd WR? Quan Cosby? Loved what he done last year at Texas....He is sliding possibly to the 4th?

12:09pm, April 26, 2009

bucuoduckfan

Layzjake- I agree.

There are many needs to fill, and the players have to fit the scheme. They traded away the second round pick where the best defensive linemen for Bates' D were being rated.

12:17pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

nvm...Donald Wahington just went off the board... :(

12:19pm, April 26, 2009

buccup56

DAMN IT WASHINGTON JUST WENT TO K.C

12:31pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

YEah...I had my fingers crossed. Now that Washington is gone I hopw we grab a DE. Not really any other CBs worth drafting IMO. Rulon Davis, Zach Potter, or Pannel Egboh would make me happy.

12:33pm, April 26, 2009

ir8toldman

Louis Murphy still available...

12:35pm, April 26, 2009

i KNOW i REALLY WANTED BRACE! BAD THE PATS WILL BE LOADED ON D FOR A VERY LONG TIME, BOY DO I HATE THEM LOL BUT BRACE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT FIT FOR US BUT I:LL TAKE MILLER ANY DAY

12:35pm, April 26, 2009

djayers7460

Leroy Hill would be a GREAT addition to our D!! Let's get him in here!

12:48pm, April 26, 2009

i LIKE THIS KID ALREADY HE WORE 99 IN COLLEGE THE NEXT SAPP PERHAPS LOL

Dude, do you realize all caps makes you seem like a spastic screaming 12 year old?

1:01pm, April 26, 2009

Chris Hovan our former nose tackle is now our smallest tackle. This line just got alot harder to run against. I can see them playing Hovan, and Peterson some D end this year which would beef up that side of the line for us.

1:06pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

Here we go!

1:07pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

Hmm....didn't thnik this was the best DE left, but at least he is big. Glad we went DE.

1:11pm, April 26, 2009

japerez3

This is a solid pick. He will be an excellent fit in our new scheme.

I'm not sure I wouldn't have rather had CB Kennan Lewis, but Miller will strengthen our dline.

Good pick.

I'm not sure about this guy. Anyone know anything on this USC guy?

1:14pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

Everything I can find on him basicly says the same thing. He has great size, structure and athletism, but needs better mechanics to stay lower. Also doesn't use his hieght to bat down maby balls, and has had injury issues.

Hopefully with good coaching he turns into something. Definetly a "potential" guy rather than a production guy.

Pewterdude

"Good move at the DT spot in round 3 by drafting Miller from Texas...we should have the cap space for LeRoy Hill at Will LB and another vet CB as a stop gap and for depth and to push "Barber out of the lineup altogether or maybe as a dime corner...
