Phillips Will Start Season At Safety

PewterReport.com is reporting Bucs safety-turned linebacker Jermaine Phillips is being moved back to safety by head coach Raheem Morris.

The move is not performance-related. The decision to move Phillips back to safety, where he spent the first seven years of his career, comes one week after the team learned starting S Tanard Jackson would be suspended for the first four games of the 2009 regular season for violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

With Phillips being moved to safety for at least the first quarter of the season, second-year player Geno Hayes likely will start at weakside linebacker for the Buccaneers.

Pewter Report will have a full story, with quotes included, later in the day.

He'll be back a LB after Tanard is back. But either way, he's a good player that can play both spots. That's not a bad thing.

I love this move, although we didn't really have a choice. I'm glad we saw enough in our LB core, and our coaching staff wasn't so enamored in this experiment, that Flip could be moved back to Safety.

Geno Hayes is a total stud and I think once he gets on the field he's going to show what he can do. I think he's really going to make it a tough decision for the coaching staff when TJack comes back.
