Cadillac To Start Thursday Night

Bucs running back Cadillac Williams will start vs. the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night (Cliff Welch)

Not only will he make his 2009 debut for the Buccaneers on Thursday night, running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, who has sustained two serious knee injuries in as many seasons, will also start the contest and see significant action vs. the Miami Dolphins.

The 2009 preseason has been underway for two weeks, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams has attempted to patiently wait to make his debut.

That wait will end Thursday night when Williams suits up to play in Tampa Bay's nationally televised home game vs. in-state rival Miami.

Williams, 27, participated in training camp despite undergoing surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon injury he sustained in the 2008 regular season finale vs. Oakland on Dec. 28.

The knee injury was Williams' second in as many seasons. In fact, the former 2005 first-round pick has played in just 10 games over the past two seasons due to the two major knee injuries.

Although he was deemed completely healthy before and during training camp, Bucs head coach Raheem Morris opted to keep Williams on the sideline for Tampa Bay's first two exhibition contests as a precaution.

"It's awesome," Morris said of Williams' return to game action. "I'm so excited to get Cadillac back, especially to see him hit and explode through holes. We've seen him make cuts and dynamic movements in practice. He looks like the old Cadillac."

He normally lets his play speak for itself, but Williams admits he tried to talk his way onto the football field for Tampa Bay's second preseason game of the year, which was in Jacksonville last week.

"It's Coach Morris' decision," said Williams. "I tried to go to him a couple of times and tell him I could play. Last week, Earnest [Graham] was a game-time decision and then we found out he wasn't playing. I went to him and said, ‘Hey, we've got one down. I'm ready to go in if you need me.' He said, ‘Nah, next week.' I understand, but if it was my decision I would have played."

Not only will he play, Williams is scheduled to start the game and see significant playing time vs. the Dolphins. Morris plans to have Williams, Derrick Ward and Earnest Graham share the workload in a 2-2-1 format, which means Williams and Ward likely will play the first two series of the game while Graham plays for one series. Return specialist Clifton Smith and fullback B.J. Askew could also see some action at running back.

"I want to go 2-2-1 and I want to keep that rotation if I can throughout the season," said Morris. "We'll have some different back situations. I'm going to mix it in, and the person getting the one [series] will make it up in the situational play. I'll try to use that format in the game. [Cadillac is] getting the first two [series] in this game. I'm looking forward to seeing him do that."

Even when he was healthy, Williams traditionally received a limited number of carries in preseason games under former Bucs head coach Jon Gruden.

The 2005 NFL Rookie of the Year award winner believes he needs a healthy workload in order to get re-acclimated to game action.

"I do need some work," said Williams. "I need to get the timing of the offense at full speed and take some licks. Thank God I'm getting the chance to go through training camp and play in preseason, unlike last year when I was just rehabbing and rehabbing, and then getting thrown in the games."

As if the team wasn't already excited about Williams' return, Morris has a special team meeting scheduled for Wednesday night. He plans to show his team a highlight reel that contains plays made in the running game by Williams, Ward, Graham and Tampa Bay's offensive line.

"I think it's going to get those guys, and our whole team, really excited," Morris said of the meeting and highlight reel. "The tape is really impressive and shows what we're capable of doing."

Given the severity of his knee injuries, many believed Williams' NFL career was in doubt, but he continues to prove skeptics wrong. He hopes his injuries are a thing of the past and is focused on proving he's still capable of running the football in Tampa Bay.

"I've taken some shots in practice and I've been banged around," said Williams. "I have participated in everything except for the games. Trust me, once Thursday gets here the last thing on my mind is going to be my knees."

INJURY UPDATE
Several players were held out of Tuesday afternoon's practice at One Buc Place, including wide receivers Antonio Bryant (knee surgery), Dexter Jackson (ankle) and Michael Clayton (hamstring), kicker Matt Bryant (hamstring), running back Kareem Huggins (knee), tight end John Gilmore (calf) and cornerback Elbert Mack (ankle).

Welcome back Caddy! Looks like Rah has big things lined up for Caddy this year, i have a feeling Graham is going to be the back getting the 1 series all year long, as well as playing some situational fullback and Caddy and Ward getting the 2-2 series. Just a hunch....

That's the best Bucs related news I've heard in weeks. Do you guys realize what this means? Cadillac and Ward are our starting RB's! I couldn't be happier.

I like Graham, but I've always, always said that when they're both healthy and given the same O-line and a decent QB to keep defenses honest that Cadillac was the better overall offensive weapon. Cadillac can hit you outside, inside and short yardage and Graham just can't get to the outside as well.

Now that Cadillac is catching well he has surpassed Graham and I'm glad Morris overruled Jags (who said when he got here he was excited about Graham but barely mentioned Cadillac and Dunn). Go Bucs! In fact, go m$&@#% #!@&ing Bucs!

He is the heart beat of this team when healthy. The emotion he plays this game with projects onto everyone around him. The drive this guy has to be a part of this game that he loves is amazing.

I know he'll come out in this game boiling over with excitement and emotion, I only hope someone reminds him to let the game come to him. Like I used to tell my wife on game days with a joy and amazement " he's a bad man!".

Thanks for all your hard work and the sweat and the pain you've pushed through to come back. I cant wait for Caddy to break off a nice run capped off with the signature war cry and flexed guns!

Go get em' Caddy!! And goooooo Bucs!

I take it that a decision is going to happen pertaining to Cadillac after this game. He better step up.

I've been waiting for this day for a long time. Caddy I love you man and you have earned this to the fullest. Plenty of ppl said you were done but I never gave up hope. You're an inspiration to anybody fighting for what they love. I just wish that everything you've gone through and have done to get where you are now, could help brighten the mental state that Aaron Sears is in right now. Haven't given up on you either Aaron, so keep fighting. If he were here to help run block with the others it would be SICK to watch. Good luck guys!

p.s. this should also help Caddys rating in Madden 10 since he is listed at 3rd string! Come on with the roster updates!

I will refrain from getting to excited, but that being said, a healthy Caddy brings a whole new dimension to the new backfield the FO has put together.

I see this as Rheem wanted to give Caddie the best possible chance to stay on the team. He sat him and untill this 3rd game to let him heal up as much as possible and get back into the swing of things. Now it's do or die. Caddie will be the starting RB for the first half, running with our 1st string offense and I think he needs look look very good or risks being cut.

I could be wrong, but most teams would have cut ties already after back to back season ending knee injuries. I think the Bucs have kept him on the payrole mainly because he has shown so much grit and determination in getting back and contributing. I hope he does well Thursday night, and most of all I hope he doesn't get hurt.

Is anyone else concerned about the way Morris is going to manage this team? I LOVE Caddy as much as the next guy but runningbacks by committee is effective with 2 guys, but a 2:2:1 is just stupid. It has been proven that rb's need to be in the game to get a feel for the game. No running backs will get as he put it, a hot hand if he is swapping them out that much. I am fine with this strategy if it's just for the preseason, but I think it would be a mistake to have all three active every sunday. If they really feel Caddi is ready we should entertain offers for trading Graham for a good DL, CB, LB or WR. My other worry is that their are several postings out there suggesting that Morris has opened trade offers on any of the three Qb's (McCown, Leftwitch, and Johnson) and that it would make his decision easier if one was traded. Are you kidding me? This guy doesn't know what the hell he is doing in my opinion. This along with the fact that the front office is sticking to their stupid youth movement plan by stubbornly not signing a good insurance policy at CB, because the guys are too old.

pkeyes73, who is out there to pickup at CB? I'm not aware of any worth picking up. I'd rather give our younger ones a chance. I am for a QB trade if it could really happen.

pkeyes73, the Giants used a 2:2:1 RB system last year and it worked out great for them. The Ravens used a 2:2:1 RB system last year and they went to the AFC championship with a rookie QB last year. How exactly is using that system just stupid?

Also, what's wrong with shopping a guy around as trade bait when he will either get dropped in a few weeks or next year and the Bucs get nothing in return anyway?

JDouble, Morris said he wants to use the 2:2:1 format throughout the season so I don't think there's any chance of Cadillac getting cut no matter how badly he performs on Thursday. He'll only get cut if he gets hurt badly.

Lol . I usually just read comments 2 c what other true fans think other than myself but I feel the need 2 put my 2 cents in because it pertains to one of my favorite players ( caddy ) . Pkeyes73 - Fyi history has proven ( Denver Broncos ) that u can plug average backs into a backfield that has OL that's talented enough 2 zone block and have good results . As for the QB trade rumors who really cares because we all know that whoever gets it won't be there too long . So stop lobbying for the we hate Rah club and enjoy the new exciting era of buccaneers football . Go Caddy !
