Bucs Fire OC Jagodzinski, Promote QBs Coach Olson

UPDATED: In a surprising move, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski Thursday. Jagodzinski, who was hired by new head coach Raheem Morris in January, will be replaced by QBs coach Greg Olson. The Bucs offered Jagodzinski the chance to remain on the staff in another capacity.

Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris began assembling his staff in January, and just several months into the job, the youngest head coach (celebrating his 33rd birthday today) in the NFL has already had to fire one of his own main hires.

In a stunning move, the Bucs fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski Thursday. Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has been promoted to offensive coordinator, but will still serve as the team's QBs coach.

The moves come just 10 days before Tampa Bay kicks off the 2009 regular season vs. the Dallas Cowboys. The Bucs play their preseason finale vs. the Texans on Friday night.

Jagodzinski was hired as Tampa Bay's new offensive coordinator on Jan. 29. He previously served as Boston College's head coach for two seasons (2007-08) before being fired from that job. He also had a one-year stint as Green Bay's offensive coordinator (2006) and spent two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2004-05).

Although he did not elaborate, Morris held a press conference at noon Thursday to explain the decision to part ways with Jagodzinski. Click here to read the transcript.

Jagodzinski spent his few months on the job implementing a zone blocking scheme. He had help from his former colleague, running backs Steve Logan, who coached at Boston College and still is on Tampa Bay's coaching staff.

However, in a statement released by the Bucs, Jagodzinski claims the team offered him the opportunity to remain a member of the coaching staff before firing him.

"I am certainly disappointed, but I wish nothing but the best for Raheem Morris and the entire Buccaneer organization," Jagodzinski said. "I was given the chance to remain on staff as the quarterbacks coach, but felt that the timing for such a move was not in the best interest for either side. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me. Again, I wish nothing but the best for this organization.”

Olson is in his second season with the Buccaneers. He was hired by former Bucs head coach Jon Gruden in 2008 after spending two seasons (2006-07) as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

In his first season with the Rams, Olson helped St. Louis' offense rank sixth overall in the NFL. The team's passing offense ranked third in the NFC. In addition, the offense ranked third in the NFL in first downs (332) and second in the NFC in points scored in the red zone (273).

Rams quarterback Marc Bulger also threw for over 4,000 yards, running back Steven Jackson rushed for over 1,500 yards and wide receivers Isaac Bruce and Tory Holt each turned in 1,000-yard seasons.

Prior to his tenure with the Rams, Olson served as offensive coordinator with Detroit (2005). He has also served as a quarterbacks coach with the Lions, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers. Olson also served as the quarterbacks coach at Purdue from 1997-00), and played an integral role in developing current Saints QB Drew Brees.

Though unusual, the Bucs aren't the only team to decide to fire their offensive coordinator just before the start of the regular season. The Kansas City Chiefs fired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey earlier this week.

Bad news....way to close to opening day for this kind of thing in my opinion. Rumor has it he wasnt happy with the Leftwich decision to start.

Sounds like the Bucs wanted to keep Olson, who I think is in the last year of his contract. Wonder how this will effect continuity on the offense so close to the season opener. Not a good sign.

Bucs are are in competition with Denver to overtake Oakland as the most disfunctional team in the NFL.

As I understand it, this is about Jags and Olsen disagreeing. All I know is that Olsen is a Gruden holdover and he has been bad mouthing the team since the mini camps. He is going to go wherever gruden goes next year. He had no faith in any of QBs from the beginning and really doesn't think the team is any good. Not good timing to do something like this. Olsen has no loyalty to this team.

10:32am, September 3, 2009

jvato24

It will affect continuity ... Some of the players had to like Coach Jags ... Now Olson comes in .. and by the way .. What a track record for Olson .. Fired by the Rams .. Led them Lions .. 8^ l

Always nice to fire and change OC a week before the season starts.

10:33am, September 3, 2009

We can't really say that it is good or bad news...when you think about it, Olsen has worked with Gruden and Jag, combined with his experience being an offensive coordinator in St Louis....this just may pan out in the long run....we'll see how it works out. Good luck Bucs....MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALL!!!!!

10:33am, September 3, 2009

sensiblefan84

I've been supportive of every move out of the Bucs for the past few months (aside from Ryan Sims, Mike Clayton, and cutting Mahan) but I'm starting to see cracks in the armor already. Geez. What a downer.

10:33am, September 3, 2009

conrad77

Kinda feels like we're on a sinking ship here boys and girls. This kind of a move this late never bodes well. I was tentatively optimistic for an 8-8 season but it isn't looking good. Hopefully we can start freeman early to see if he has any potential and if not we know we can bag Morris, trade Freeman and use what is likely to be a very high first round pick on a big time QB.

10:34am, September 3, 2009

lazyjake

I liked Jags and the offense. Not a big fan of Olson. Jags had to do something behind pretty messed up to get fired right before the season.

I just may have lost the excitement for this team this year.

10:36am, September 3, 2009

BuccanAy

Abxolutely PATHETIC. Morris and his cronies will be booed off the field. I was secretly hoping Jagz would eventually get the HC job, and I guess Morris decided to preemptive strike. This is a disgrace.

10:36am, September 3, 2009

tummler1

it will definately have an effect, unless they are planning on still running jagz plays. how will they install a new offense in 2 weeks? this is awful, may as well put in freeman now, as this season is really a wash. inexperience up top is starting to show.

10:36am, September 3, 2009

conrad77

shhhhhh....do you guys hear that? I think it's a fat lady singing!

10:39am, September 3, 2009

ehinote

Tummler1 - They can't possibly install a new offense before the season starts. That's why they promoted Olsen, because he knows the offense and can call the plays. I'm just sick that Olsen gets his way. He needs to go follow Gruden around during this season and wait until Gruden gets a job.

10:40am, September 3, 2009

rcpadrick

It definitely makes me wonder what Jags did to get fired. To do this only a few months after being hired and a week before the regular season tells me something was stinky in the kitchen.

The timing would suggest a displeasure with the Leftwich thing. I wouldn't disagree with him on that one.

10:42am, September 3, 2009

PoundThatRock

So... apparently there was something going on behind the scene. I don't even know what to say.

The timing of this is aweful and I don't get it at all.

10:44am, September 3, 2009

I would really like to know PR's honest analysis of this firing and the timing of it - and what initial rating PR would give for the "direction" of this young team ---- on a scale of 0 to 10 (Zero being "horrible", 10 being the best - i.e. NE Patriots)

My rating would be a 2

10:46am, September 3, 2009

shaaslaw

i thought Jags had a run-heavy and tight-end-heavy offensive philosophy,.

We've been told to get excited about this style.

Now that he's gone, now what? The answer: we have a bunch of back up coaches and back up players, with little experience.

omg, what happend, this isnt good whole new offense what the !#%$%$$^$$^^$@@. i didnt have much faith for this year .wow what dysfunction , he must of wanted out not a good sign

lets see the list of offenses olson has worked with:lions,49ers,bears,rams...yep, all garbage. cant wait to see/hear the presser on this one...... i'm going to start counting the number of times morris says "you talk about..." in every press conference. i'm trying hard to stay positive about the season, but it gets tougher every day.

10:52am, September 3, 2009

jleonard55

Guys, this has to be over the QB situation and that's what ESPN is reporting. As I've posted numerous times, every single SUCCESSFUL zone blocking scheme that I've seen, has had a mobil QB. I don't blame Jag's for not wanting his name on this debacle that's about to happen. He's not the type to sit back quietly over this type of thing. Besides the fact that McCown clearly fits into the offense much better than Leftwich, McCown clearly outplayed Leftwich in the preseason. If your the offensive coordinator with al the experience that Jags has, would you be inclined to just sit there and take it.

My guess is that Olsen is going to employ the Rams drop back scheme more in the passing game, but I don't know what he'll try and do with the running game. The zone blocking scheme fits our O-lin and running backs to a T.

10:52am, September 3, 2009

BigEd1340am

Their dropping like flies at One Buc! This is another example of a rookie Head Coach (cheap labor) going in the wrong direction. If the front office and coaching staff is in dissaray, image what the team will look like on the field. I'm thinking the OC didn't agree with the Head Coach's decision with the guy under center. Can I change my estimated win total for 2009 from 5 to 2...or is it too late?

10:53am, September 3, 2009

Something happened behind close doors that I doubt we will not know for a while. This makes no sense, so I am hoping that it had nothing to do with football. This is very strange?

I'm willing to give it my full support, but I even have to say this is a troubling move.

10:56am, September 3, 2009

Yeah this has to be over the QB situation, maybe Jags simply was not comfortable with Leftwich getting the nod. This seems like a 4-12 season on the horizon.

11:02am, September 3, 2009

shaaslaw

I hope to see Duemig as critical of the move as he has been of the "old" regime.

Whatever the reason for this Jags canning, I don't care to know.

One thing I know: We as fans have to be critical of the direction this is going or else we are going to have a lLONG stretch of mediocrity at best.

put the fan base money towards the RAYS INSTEAD--- they are at least in the hunt and have a good foundation

11:04am, September 3, 2009

Pity it wasn't Morris who got fired! Mark my words, the Bucs will be lucky to go 4-12 (Peter King's prediction) with Sluggo and the dysfunctional team.

May Morris be the next to go!!!!!

PR - ASK THE DIFFICULT QUESTIONS!! You know we're not going to get it from the "official" channels!

Regardless, between the Leftwich announcement and Jag's departure...I'm queueing up the Bad News Bears theme song to accompany our game highlights - while I uncork another bottle of bourbon.

Perfect year for the throwbacks - we can actually play like the old creamsicles as well.

What I saw last Thursday was a team in dissaray. This proves it. I had started out thinking this was a 6 win team, then after last week I revised it down to 4 wins. Now, who knows when this team will win its first game, November?

Looks like amature hour at the Buc Palace...Wonder how "excited" the Raheem Regime is now? This mess started with the firing of Dungy and it has taken this long for us to see the final results.

11:11am, September 3, 2009

Well said jleonard55... I agree 100%. How on earth can one be a bucs fan? It's alike the 80's and early 90's all over again. I'm almost too embarrassed to say I'm a bucs fan

yes, EZ, you are so right.

PERFECT year for the THROWBACKS!!!

rcpatrick:
"nearly out of contention" -- that's bandwagon

Kazmir was just like Clayton, but at least the RAYS were willing to consider the past results when deciding to drop millions on someone. Clayton for $5 Million + a year ????

....because he's friends with one of the coaches.

Remember, it was Jagz who brought Matt Ryan up, it's mind boggling that Morris thinks he knows more about QB's. This guy has turned into CZAR. He's overwhelmed with power and will fire any and everyone who doesn't see things as he does.
This is a DISGRACE!!!

11:16am, September 3, 2009

jleonard55

Man they try to paint a rosy picture of Olsen. I did some quick checks and the Rams scored 4 more points in the 2006 season, than they did in the 2005 season, the year before he got there. They finished 11th in the NFL in offense in 05 and ranked 10th in 06 after he got there. What you have to look closely at, is the fact that the Rams Starting QB Marc Bulger only played in 8 games in 05 and he started all 16 games in 06. Granted schedules and personel changes can effect things, but I still wouldn't call it a giant leap if you had your starting QB for 8 more games in a season and only scored 4 more points.

The next tid bit they leave out, is the fact that he's offense fell off a cliff in 2007, which is one of the reasons he was no longer employed by the Rams. They scored 104 points less than the previous season and finished the 2007 season as the 28th ranked offense in the NFL.

For those of you interested, here's the link to where I got my info:

Even more unsettling Buc news. Awful. This news lowers my expectations even more.

Regarding the upcoming noon press conference, it's not going to help fans understand what the heck is going on at 1 Buc..

Coach Morris cannot coherently answer ANY question, much less something as important as this matter.

It feels like the team is in complete disarray and that the inmates are running the asylum.

11:25am, September 3, 2009

Matt Ryan was already at BC when Jagz was hired. Not like he recruited him and developed him 100%. Plus while Jagz was there BC has the worst recruiting classes in the ACC.

I dont like this one bit but im going to wait and hear the reason why before i start screaming for Morris to be fired. Im sure it wasnt just one thing and i doubt it was only over crappy ass McClown.

11:39am, September 3, 2009

I seriously don't think this is a "money saving" move in any way. It may cost them, in the long run.

I also don't think this was about promoting Olsen. I think it had more to do with something Jags did then it did with anything about Olsen. If you look at it, Olsen is the only one on the offensive side of the ball that had any coordinator experience, so he's the logical choice, albeit not a great one.

11:40am, September 3, 2009

Wasn't exactly thrilled when bucs hired Ra as head coach, but thought he did a great job hiring off and def coordinators. This is not good this close to the season. Jags should have had the choice which qb was going to run his offense. In the end we probably should have started Freeman to get him acclimated in a "lost/rebuilding" year.

11:45am, September 3, 2009

Wasn't Jags a "little light" on play calling experience?

Don't believe he did it at BC.

11:46am, September 3, 2009

buccaneers0203

Unbelievable....From Gruden and Kiffin to Ra and company. Back to the old Bucs. May as well were the orange all year. No plan. We need a new GM, head coach, and a direction. Leftwich is a joke as a starter. McClown is a joke. Freeman is not near ready. Bucs will be in the Bradford sweepstakes all year and can't draft him because of the Freeman pick. They won't trade Freeman Ra loves him. Heck we traded up for Freeman. Bad Bad things to come. The QB coach has more say than the OC? Ra is in way over his head. Bates is the only one with any football intel left so he will probably be fired tomorrow.

11:47am, September 3, 2009

lprock22

Wow, this is all so pathetic that all I can do is laugh. The football gods are no smiling on the Bucs anymore. I always have been and always will be a Bucs fan but I think until the new dark ages are over, meaning until Morris, Dominick and Freeman, or as I like to call them the 'axcis of crap' are run out of town, I will need to focus my efforts elsewhere (thank god hockey season is on its way). This team, despite the rhetoric coming from Morris and Dominick, has NO plan, NO direction, NO identity and NO friggin clue as to what they are doing. Galloway, Brooks, Dunn, June and the others were lucky to get out when they did. Way to go driving a franchise that came from nothing and became something back into nothing. I'm sorry but the touting of these back up calibre players as the up and coming superstars, the trade for a TE we didn't need, the lack of work done on the defense and other key positions, the suspension of Jackson, Sears' thing, firing Jags days before the season starts, drafting Tito Jackson among all the other moronic decisions this regime has made are simply too much for me. Since this season is already a wash lets hope that the regime falls hard enough on its face to be run out of town so we only have to suffer this bush leage crap from them for one year. Stop ruining my team!!!

11:48am, September 3, 2009

I'm a Bucs fan from way back, so I remember the creamsickle days and how we suffered for over a decade. I am beginning to worry that we (Bucs fans) many be asked to suffering once again.

With that in mind, in addition to your spot on reporting I think PR should add creamsickle Buccaneer merchandice to the PR Store.

11:56am, September 3, 2009

The next time I come on PR I want the new BREAKING NEWS thing to say 'Glazers admit mistake, cut losses and fire Coach Morris and GM Dominick'.

That would be the only thing that would give me any hope right now. And no I'm not giving them anymroe chances they've shown how inept they are and they haven't even neede to coach a game yet....if you can;t run an offseason you sure as hell aren't going to run a season properly, let's get that straight.

Anyone see Jags comments so far...he was offered the Quarterbacks coach position as a consolation. So, they were going to demote him and even worse make Olson his boss?!?! This just keeps getting more weird!

I know I'll get behind the team once we get going....but I think this is what you'll hear alot of in the huddle this season:
"OK - Everybody go out!"

And would you haters please get off McCown's back - we have as many people trashing McCown as were saying a couple years ago "Let's give Chris Simms one more chance...".

ezbucrider-

At this point it doesn't matter who our QB is. We have no offensive continuity at this point and all three of the candidates suck, and they suck HARD. So much for developing Freeman properly...firing his OC not even into his first season. Maybe that's why they fired Jags because mayeb he was the only one to speak out about what a POS Freeman is. Just a thought.

Jags didnt think of "Lefty" as mobile good enough to run "his" offense. To ask him to step down to coach the QB's is a slap in the face. Probably only one with ball enough to not agree with outcome of "competition".

Who agrees with the following?

The glazers made this decision because someone (Jags) questioned them or spoke up.

My theory from when the Bucs let Brooks go is that Gruden would not cut Brooks, but was asked at this "lunch" to do so. What else could that pre-firing lunch had been for?

Gruden's days had passed, I will admit, but that never explained the rash decisions made immediately thereafter.

the stated "direction" since Gruden was replaced has been pathetic if you honestly evaluate what has happened in the past few months.

signing Clayton to a 5-year deal

signing TE Winslow to a long term deal before he took the field for us, under the guise that Jags offense going to be a blocking, ball control offense.

not giving A Bryant an extension when he probably deserved one

not taking Percy Harvin and waiting and getting Tebow next year (and i dislike the gators ...)

not keeping Garcia, who had toughness, for at least a year, even if you wanted to go Freeman in the draft.

seriously, what Buc fan would have been ok with the following: Leftwich our starting QB for this year, and firing our touted OC entering the last preseason game????

12:20pm, September 3, 2009

I'll say I was definitely surprised to read this. I liked what I heard about Jags' scheme. This has move had to be made based on the man himself. He wasn't getting along well enough with somebody that Morris deemed to be more important to the team than he was. That person could be either Morris himself, Olsen, Leftwhich, whoever.

I'll reserve judgement until I hear Morris' rational for the decision. Again, this obviously wasn't performance based but that doesn't mean he didn't have a good reason.

Just some food for thought, what would everyone have thought of Gruden if he had kicked Keyshawn off the team before the 2003 season started? We would have thought it was a dumb move especially coming off a Super Bowl win. Would the team have been better off that year if Gruden had made a statement and kicked Keyshawn off the team before the season when he saw the writing on the wall with Keyshawn's ego? Probably. Everyone I've heard interviewed has said inflated egos were the main reason for the collapse in 2003.

Let's just wait and see what the rational was before we grab the pitchforks and light the torches.

12:45pm, September 3, 2009

I read on ESPN that Steve Logan was actually calling the plays and Jags was more of an overseer. More suited for HC.

lol jongruden that may end up being all to true before this is all over...I'm not saying I am not willing to give Olsen a chance at OC...he may do a fine job...just not a move you make 2 weeks before opening day in my eyes. We will see where this takes us this year and hopefully Morris can do well, any bucfan HOPES the team does well even if its not looking good, but it makes you wonder if Heem fails horribly this year how long his leash will be with the Head Coach's that are likely to be available next year...Shannahan, Holmgren, Cower etc. All in all still gonna be a VERY interesting year to watch unfold...Go Bucs!

The White Tiger

Un-freaking-believable.

the hits just keep on rolling....we are now casually being mentioned in the same breath as Oakland, Kansas City, and the brilliant crew in Denver...?

I think they're taking the idea of a "honeymoon period" a little too far. This is a really bad omen.

...and I don't even believe in omens...

It comes back to me that the owners took too long making a decision putting more pressure on Dominick and Morris to select an OC - then THEY took time to select "the right guy" and now we find out - Jagz ISN'T the right guy?

More and more it makes me wonder if MORRIS is the right guy? If he had a plan and targeted who he wanted he told us he went out and got him....

Now we have 4 cheap marriages of convenience 2 days before the final pre-season game and 8 DAY'S before the start of the season (all while paying alimony for Gruden and Allen).

This group is WHACKED - they are really doing everything they can to SUCK outloud.

Nice plan - it's a good thing Bruce Allen got the Glazers 2.5 million for Jake Plummer - they can apply it to the 3 coaches that no longer coach for them - but we're still paying for....!

I bet Bruce Allen had no idea he was subsidizing his own severance package with that deal...

disgusting.

JonGruden - You won't hear from JDouble. Even he is starting to sense the chaos.

Glazers - Please give us back our professional head coach (Gruden) and GM (Allen) before it’s too late.
