Morris Calls Out Adams, Hints He May Be Replaced

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris called out DE Gaines Adams, Tampa Bay's first-round pick in 2007, on Monday for his failure to get to the quarterback during Tampa Bay's 0-2 start. Morris said that Adams has lacked fire and not played as fast and as hard as he did a year ago, and may be replaced in the starting lineup.

What was supposed to be a breakout season for Gaines Adams has been anything but that for the third-year defensive end that has failed to record a sack over the first two games of the season and hasn’t even been close to doing so.

Through two games in what was supposed to be a defensive end-friendly scheme, Adams, the fourth overall pick in 2007, has just five tackles and has done nothing to quell the “bust” labels that some fans and media pundits have placed on him for recording just 12.5 sacks in his first two years in the NFL.

During Monday’s press conference, Bucs head coach Raheem Morris joined the growing list of Adams critics, and admitted that the necessary effort has not been there at the start of the 2009 campaign.

“He hasn’t [put forth the production], and I think Gaines knows that,” Morris said. “Gaines is one of those guys that knows that he is judged on whether he touches the quarterback or not. Right now he is not getting production as far as not just touching the quarterback, the tackles, the sacks. He’s not getting any of that. He is not playing up to par right now. He’s holding himself accountable. We have to hold him accountable, and it is tough right now. He is not getting it done. There are no excuses. There are no explanations. Gaines is not getting it done right now.”

Adams got off to a hot start in 2008, recorded two sacks against Atlanta in Week 2, along with making six tackles. Over the next two weeks, Adams had key interceptions against Green Bay and Chicago, returning the pick against the Bears for a key touchdown in the Bucs’ overtime victory. Yet thus far in 2009, Adams has been ice cold when it comes to making impact plays.

“Last year to start off the season his whole thing was to play hard – to play harder than the people he was playing against,” said Morris. “Right now I just don’t see that. I don’t see that same fire. I don’t see him playing the same speed as how hard he played last year. We got to get that back. We got to get that back from him. If we don’t get that back it is going to be a long season for Gaines, and us.”

Morris indicated that if players – including Adams – don’t produce, the coaching staff will look at making lineup changes.

“We definitely have to change some things up, and try to get some people out there,” Morris said. “You have to find the best combination of players and your best people that can go out there and play, and that is what our job is right now. You don’t have to keep the same guys out there if they are not getting it done. You put new guys out there and let them go do it. Let them get a shot at it, and try to do it at least.”

Morris singled out the play of newly acquired defensive end Tim Crowder, who got his first action for Tampa Bay on Sunday at Buffalo, recording two tackles. He or Stylez G. White could be a candidate to replace Adams in the starting lineup if his play does not improve quickly.

“Crowder was a pleasant surprise yesterday,” said Morris. “He was in there mostly on run downs, but when he was up he showed up. I hope to see more of Crowder. I hope to we can get Kyle Moore healthy, and see Kyle Moore. Quincy Black has been another (option) as you talk about.”

On Monday, Adams didn’t reveal much about what he and the Buccaneers defense needed to do to turn around their play and get off the 0-2 losing streak in 2009.

“We’ve got to overcome the situation and just work a little bit harder and get ready for the next game,” said Adams.

According to Morris, who said back in the spring that Adams had to become a double-digit sacker this year to avoid being a bust, his young defensive end has to work a lot harder as he has just one sack in the Bucs' last six games.

Gaines is done-Lets find a replacement and move on already...
Maybe give him a chance at linebacker,he is no defensive end..

See-its time to weed out the weak links on this team-expose all of the players who dont have what it takes to bring this team forward..I bet Hovan might be the next guy to catch some heat..

Lets go Bucs-CUT THAT MEAT !!!

Time to see what Kyle Moore can do. The tackles aren't playing that well either. Roy Miller needs to be starting soon.

I would rather leftwich and defensive end. At least he's not afraid to get roughed up a little bit.

I respect Coach Morris because he expects results. Playing time is earned, not given based on draft status. We are finding out who can play and who can't. The Bucs may not win alot this year. But they are building a foundation for future success.
Go Bucs!!!!!!

DE and CB are the main two positions in nexts year draft...

Welcome to a rbuilding year..

I think the whole D-Line will be put on notice as soon as today. We are not getting any production out of the first unit. Wilkerson did get a sack yesterday, but that was it. I expect to see Roy Miller starting very soon as well!

I would not be sad if Gaines is put on the trading block RIGHT NOW! Not that we would get much for him... but at least something. He just doesn't have it and he's taking up a roster spot.

dcrum35,

Absolutely. at the beginning of the yaer it was obvious what the 3 biggest positions of need were: CB, Dline, and WR. After 2 games, that's the exact same assessment.

I would argue that the Bucs need a game-changing Defensive tackle more than a DE. If the Bucs do end up with a top ten pick, my hope is they grab the top DT on the board. You can find great pass rushers later in the draft.

This is another example of how great teams draft the top talent rather than need. The Bucs are always reaching for need in the first round.

in 2004 we needed a WR - and took Clayton, the fifth receiver off the board with the 15th pick. You should never take the 5th best player at a position with a top 15 pick.

In 2005 - the Bucs needed a RB, and took a guy who's durability was in question with Cadillac.

In 2007 - the Bucs needed a DE and took Gaines Adams, when a lot of signs pointing to it being a VERY week year for defensive lineman.

In 2009 - the Bucs need a QB, I'll give Freeman the benefit of the doubt, but most agree it was a reach.

Because of reaching rather than playing to the drafts strengths - the bucs passed on guys like Adrian Peterson, Aaron Rodgers. Demarcus Ware, and Shawne Merriman because they had filled those needs the prior year with a reach, or felt they could wait a year to fill those needs even though the talent may not be there.

There is no bigger example of the bucs tendency to reach than Dexter Jackson - last year's 2nd round pick.

If Gaines truly is a bust - then the Bucs will have nothing to show for their first round pick in 2007 and their second round picks in both 2007 and 2008 (Sears and Dexter Jackson). That is impossible to overcome in the short term for any team.

Imagine this Bucs team with three more premium players on the field.

crem,

Unfortunately it isn't as easy as, "Let's just find his replacement an move on already". Unfortunately - pass rushing defensive ends who actually produce do not grow on trees.

Hopefully, this makes us appreciate Simeon Rice a lot more than I think the general fan base did while he was here.

You gotta love Morris' honesty and straight forward talk - he calls it like he see's it. And right now, he's not seeing jack from Gaines. Put Gaines on the bench and let him get pissed about being a bust. If he can come out pissed off and wanting to show the world that he's not going to go out of this league as a wasted pick, then maybe he'll be somebody one day. If that doesn't lite a fire under his a$$, then nothing will and good ridance.

2:53pm, September 21, 2009

pinkstob

I say we see how Gaines responds to being called out by Morris over the next few games before declaring we should get rid of him altogether. But if we do trade Gaines by the trade deadline or the end of the season I don't want just a draft pick, I want a player. I say if we trade Gaines we trade him to the Jets for V. Gholston and a 6th round pick or something. I think both of these players have the same two problems: they aren't playing with enough fire and they are playing in a defensive scheme that doesn't best fit their talents.

Gaines has a much better chance of being successful in a 3-4. He moves around well in space, he can catch well enough and he has great straight line speed and agility. He'll fare much better going up against RB's and TE's when rushing the passer.

Gholston had a lot of success at Ohio State playing in a 4-3 with a hand on the ground. Gholston had 37 bench reps at the combine and ran in the 4.6's to go along with his sack production in college. His problem in a 3-4 is that he doesn't have good hips and can't move well in open space. I think he'll be much more effective going back to a 4-3.

The only question is getting either of these guys to play with more fire. Maybe the new surroundings can help. Kind of like the Galloway for Keyshawn trade; it could be better for both players and both teams.

Filmbuc- Not to make light of the situation but keeping Gaines is like having no DE at all...He is and will NEVER be as good as Simeon Rice..Simeon was probably my favorite Buc-hell I would rather see him playing for us now than Adams, and he has been out of the game for two years !!
It is obvious that good pass rushers dont grow on trees-but we need to quit wasting time trying to develop and redevelop dead wood..Another season-hell another game wasted trying to get Gaines to show up keeps a Crowder off the field..Not to say Crowder is some kind of savior, but in a week with the team, his presence was felt alot more than Adams..
Cut that meat !!! Dead meat rots in the heat !!!Gaines will never be..

comparing Gaines to Rice is as foolish as comparing him(Adams) to D.Ware..

I agree with tyork and pinkstob - there's nothing to gain by giving up on him now.

If Morris Really wants to make a mark in this lockerroom he should do the following:
This week make Gaines empty out his locker and box it all up and put it in the trunk of his car.If he shows up against the Giants,he can bring his boxes back in..If he shows up against Washington as well,he gets a locker back..If Gaines is again a no show vs New York-His s**t will be packed and he can just leave..He can take his final game check and say goodbye..This will speak volumes to those on this roster who are just taking up space..We can use his spot for developing the future instead of holding on to the past..

Right now we can't count on Adams. He absolutely was awful this past game. Start someone else, but we have to play him some; there isn't enough better players available out there.
Shape up Adams. Get tough and aggressive.
Go Bucs!

Sackmaster97

I have 1 question i wish the media could've asked coach morris and the defensive staff... What about putting Gaines in front of the RT and seeing what he does there. What i see is the Bucs forcing him to be that Great pass rusher going against the LT. Why not having him move around. If i remember right, he made alot of plays last yr @ LE. Damn just move the kid to LE instead of RE. Stop shitting on Gaines and try to help him out.

P.S
I'll be flying over from MA to watch the bucs for the first time during the Packers game. We better start winning and start showing some promises because i will be a very mad fan when i come down there and see us being beat ridiculous.

1) This year is about finding out which players can play and be building blocks, and which ones are either role players or no players.

Gaines Adams may well not be the absolute dominant stud that we hoped he can be. However, that doesn't mean he won't be of value to our team. Let's say that one of the top RE becomes available in free agency next year. The Bucs sign him, and now Adams is coming off the bench. Not a bad player to come off the bench. But by the end of this season, we will KNOW what we have in Adams. This is true of our LB (Hayes, Black, Rudd), as well as Talib, Piscatelli, and soon Jackson. Next year we will have a good idea of where we will need to find replacements.

2) It's only week 2

I know this is hard to accept, but it IS only week 2 in new offensive and defensive systems. Give our coaches a chance to COACH, and our players a chance to LEARN. We may learn that some of them are not starting caliber. OK. That's what a good boss does... he give people a chance, and then puts people in the place where they can get the most out of their talent. That takes some time. We KNOW we don't have all the right pieces to do what Raheem, Olson, and Bates want to do. But with young players, they have to be GROOMED. It takes coaching, time, mistakes, and responses. Let's see at the end of the season which Bucs are keepers.

3) We are not as good a team as we were last year.

Let's admit it. We all knew this. But just because we are not as good as last year, does not mean we are going the wrong direction. The team we had last year was not going to get any better. It had reached it's full potential. Was Derrick going to improve this year dramatically? (I love you Derrick!) Was Garcia going to toss 20 TD's? (He was fun to watch, wasn't he!)

4:20pm, September 21, 2009

dandidriksen

Galloway, Hilliard, Dunn, June... they all had peaked. The goal is this: what kinda team will we have in 3 years? The Gruden team was in trouble. But this team, after some draft picks and letting the younger guys play... they have a much great potential to be good. So we have sacrificed this year for future years. It took years for Dungy to draft and coach up Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, Barber. I remember Lynch trying to decide if he was NFL caliber. I watched Barber get burned deep... did he have enough speed? Brooks and Sapp... well, they were keepers right out of the box! But they had to PLAY there way to being a dominant team. In those early years, there were players that were BUCS that were not answers. They were replaced after a year or two as better/younger players came along. That is what the BUCS are doing now. That is the essence of rebuilding.

So, while being frustrated watching the game, I was excited to see Sabby respond, Penn play well, and Mack make a play!

4:26pm, September 21, 2009

dandidriksen

So, my question is...
What do you see in this team that is exciting for the future? Which players have kinda surprised you with their play? I'll start!
1) Piscatelli: He's got a lot to work on, no doubt, but he had two turnovers, was NOT burned deep, and played well. He missed a tackle in the hole, gotta improve on that. But I like him.

2) Mack: Not sure if he will ever be a starting CB, but as a #3 or #4, he has shown he can play. Last week he got burned. This week he knocked away a perfectly thrown ball for a TD. Good Job!

3) Hayes: He was EVERYWHERE! Passing, running, blitzing. He reminded me of a young Brooks. Is he durable enough? Gotta watch that durning the year... but I like what I see.

4) Stroughter: Well, bad game for him, but he gets open, runs the field well. He's gotta work on ball security (Graham had that problem early on in his career), but he has flashed real potential. Probably a #3 receiver... not a #1, but he can make a difference.

the problem is bates is a terrible coordinator past his time and the playes look at Rah as a friend instead of a boss this team has no future, i think olsen (gruden under study) is gonna be great in this league but I'm still a loyal fan and i will still die hard every sunday

5:05pm, September 21, 2009

djayers7460

I think we sit him, let Kyle Moore and Stylez White get some time. Make G. Adams earn his way back into the starting line-up. Aqib Talib is a joke as well! He has talent, but there were only two times I saw him yesterday; once he was starting a fight on special teams and then he got beat deep by T. Owens.

Sackmaster97 well you better start desensitizing because I traveled to Tampa for opening week from Dallas. I sat near the field (15th row) and witnessed the secondary get reemed and had to drive all the way back to Dallas like that, dont do it!

djayers7460- you also forgot the facemask call against pacman Talib...This guy has talent, too bad its matched with an equally short fuse..I would not be surprised if he gets suspended or ejected from a game or two within the next two seasons..The guy needs to simmer down-somebody give that angry kid a freakin hug already!!

Sack 97, they have been lining gaines up against the right tackles, and he can't get to the Q.B. from there either. He needs to be benched, and give Crowder a chance. Maybe he'll do better coming off the bench, the dude just does'nt seem to have the fire to be a Q.B. killer. I think they should bring that kid Holmes back also, none of our ends are getting it done.

I remember when PR had an article featuring Adams saying That he will flourish in Bates new defensive scheme that its desinged for the DE to have big games, ok I understand their reasoning but the truth is Gaines sucks and wouldn't flourish under any system. Bloggers hammered me for saying this two months ago, where are they now repeating my thoughs.

there were no excuse for the line this week. at times when they did have pressure, the coverage was horrible. too many guys open quick. the qbs the past two weeks have been able to hit the quick pass at any hint of pressure. a lot of that falls on coverage. there were times where the quick passes were covered, but there never was any significant pressure. there were a few hits on edwards, but most went for completions anyways. there were a number of times edwards had 5 seconds to throw. that completely falls on the line.

im starting to believe that morris needs to have his hands in the defensive play calling a little more. bates isnt using his players strenghths correctly IMO. morris when he was coordinator in college ran lots of blitzes. after watching a lot of the successful defenses the past couple weeks, they all have been blitzing often. they are also loading up different spots of the line. i havent seen the bucs do that yet. i havent seen the bucs load like that. its just traditional gap blitzes which have become pretty easy for most teams to stop being that its been done for the last 30 years.

i hope there is continual improvement by the d this season. if not, there may be some large turnover their again next year. on the plus side, they cant get much worse.

good to see sabby and mack respond. hayes has been awesome the first couple games. black has been invisible out there. maybe i just havent noticed him, but it seems like hes been non-existent. i still think this dude is a workout warrior. hopefully im wrong because he has good potential.

talibs incedental facemask is a precurser to him being ejected? or a scrum that about 20 other people were involved in shoving each other at some point? drama queens. talib has held roy williams to 3 catches for 38 yards(66yrd TD was against barber and flip) and held TO to 3 catches for 48yrds and a TD. pretty damn good for a second year players first season as a starter. oh.....its the first 2 games too. get real, this kid is the best defender we have right now. the only one you might be able to argue is ruud. he hasnt shown up much either.

I say give him a few more games, and see if he can put it together, after that if there is not an improvement, bench him.

The team will not compete this year or anytime soon unless a pass rush starts.

To be the overall 4th pick in the draft and to not even get a tackle is just pathetic.

He needs to be a force.

Well, at least Raheem's not blind and can see what we see. Now, what he does about it is another story.

As for Adams not getting it mentally, maybe he doesn't have anything mentally. What the hell was he thinking when he ripped Trent Edwards helmet off by the facemask in that pile Sunday? Inept, and a moron to boot.

Wasn't Gaines Adams on top of Mark Domink's draft board that year? I remember Kiffen being Giddy about getting this guy.

Guess Gaines fooled them all, and now he is stealing money.

Put him at LB and see how he does.

11:10am, September 22, 2009

Really?

How funny will it be when he goes to Dallas or Green Bay or KC or wherever and tears it up as an OLB?! Maybe he is a 3-4 OLB...who knew.

not sure if anyone remembers when Gaines was drafted, but I remember watching his face show NO emotion when the BUCs drafted him - my first thought was that he didn't want to come to Tampa. Then he sort of smiled when they handed him a BUCs cap and I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe I wasn't!

Well Gaines, there is good news. You might be able to leave soon!

12:58pm, September 22, 2009

gg72049

I agree with giving him a chance to show what he can do as a linebacker in rush situations. Let him line up wherever he sees an opening in getting to the QB in pass plays! I think he definitely plays better when he isn't locked into a position next to an offensive lineman and is left to improvise. Since he is a bust as a down lineman, why not try him at something he might be better at.

I thought Bates said that he was going to use Black as a blitzing linebacker a lot, yet his blitz schemes are horrible and far and few between! I agree with some other posters in saying that Bates schemes are more of the problem than the players themselves.(other than Adams as a DE). Morris needs to take over the defense as someone said and make changes now instead of waiting until we are completely the laughing stock of the NFL!

Bates, your defense line looks as sad as Kiffens did last year! Start blitzing like all of the other good teams do in putting pressure on the QB and not giving him 5 to 7 seconds to throw the ball. ( Jets, Giants, Buffalo, Pittsburg, Dolphins)

1:04pm, September 22, 2009

dcrum35

I am not going to pile on Gaines, I like him and think he is putting forth the effort, he just doesn't have it. He'll get a few more games then we will probably see alot more of White and Moore. Maybe put Gaines on the other side. He is a good athlete but he might be better suited for a OLB in a 3-4.

As far as the team: keep looking for the positives people. This is a rebuilding year or 2. That means they are trying to see who is worth keeping around.

To be optimisitc... to a fault probably... I think the NYG game is closer than people think because the Bucs should be able to run well against them. They just have to stick with it and not get pass happy. That will also keep the defense off the field... which is a good thing right now.
