T-Jack Is Back From Suspension

The Buccaneers defense will get a much-needed boost from the return of starting free safety Tanard Jackson, who served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Jackson is excited to return to action after watching Tampa Bay's 0-4 start and is expected to play this Sunday at Philadelphia.

The Buccaneers’ 31st-ranked defense welcomed back starting free safety Tanard Jackson this week from a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The Bucs have a one-week roster exemption to determine Jackson’s physical conditioning, and although Jackson has not been officially activated to the 53-man roster yet, that is supposed to happen later this week and he is expected to suit up at Philadelphia on Sunday.

“I learned a lot [during the suspension], but the main thing is that this is what I love to do. This is what I’m blessed to do with God-given ability,” Jackson said, when asked what he learned from his suspension. “This is where I need to be. I missed everything besides the games, too. I missed being around the guys, being in the locker room and being able to come to work.”

Tampa Bay announced Jackson’s suspension on August 18 and he was placed on the reserved-suspended list on September 5 after participating in the preseason, which is allowed under NFL rules. The Bucs’ fourth-round pick in 2007 led the team in tackles during the preseason with 17 stops (12 solo), and one tackle for loss.

Jackson, a third-year pro, has started since the first game of his rookie season and has totaled 180 tackles, three interceptions, 19 passes defensed and one sack in his Tampa Bay career. Jackson recorded 102 tackles last year, which was a career high.

Since his suspension, the Bucs have gone 0-4 with Jackson resigned to watch the games on television, which was incredibly hard on the team’s starting free safety.

“It was difficult, especially me knowing that I could have contributed,” Jackson said. “But I’m not going to say if I was here we would have won all four. It was difficult and there’s a lot of work to do. I’m glad I’m here and we’re going to be in this together.

“I’d like to think I could’ve made a difference. It happens. I think we pride ourselves on not giving up big plays, but I think we’ve given up a little more than we wanted to these first four games. All we can do is come in day-in-and-day-out, week-in-and-week-out, and get better.”

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris said Wednesday that he isn't sure how much Jackson would play vs. the Eagles or if he would simply be the backup in the team’s three-safety rotation behind Sabby Piscitelli and Will Allen on SUnday

“We’ll go through this week and see where he is at the end of the week since we don’t have to make a decision until then in terms of how much we play him,” said Morris. .

In his first practice back with the team, Jackson impressed, notching an interception Wednesday. Bucs defensive coordinator Jim Bates went as far as saying, "Oh yeah, Tanard will play Sunday."

Allen is excited to have Jackson back and expects him to work into the rotation this week.

“I’m not sure what the rotation will be,” said Allen. “Whatever the coaches decide. That’s what it is going to be, and that is what we have to live with. We understand that Tanard is a great talent. He needs to play. He needs to be on the field.

“I think Tanard is going to bring a lot of energy. I think he’ll bring a lot of playmaking ability like he has shown in the past. I think being suspended for four weeks, but he’s going to come back with a chip on his shoulder and play with an edge. We’re going to need that going into Philly because it is a rough environment. It is great to have him back.”

Jackson spent the last four weeks at home and also back at his alma mater, Syracuse University, where he spent some time around his old college team although he worked out on his own. Jackson did not work out at One Buccaneer Place as uspended players are not allowed at the team facilities.

“I just spent my time working out and trying to get ready,” Jackson said. “I was staying busy, working out and got accustomed to the playbook, watching the games and getting some film lessons. Just trying to get back.

“It was difficult, but I knew the situation before hand. As time passed, it got a little easier because I stayed in touch with the guys. We talked and it wasn’t too hard [to stay in tune with what was happening]. It wasn’t easy being away from the locker room and being able to watch film with the guys.”

Morris picked him up from the airport on Monday night and the head coach wanted to make sure that Jackson wouldn’t let down the team again.

“We had a long talk where we discussed some things and he’s happy to have me back,” Jackson said. “Just being away on those four weeks and having time to reflect how I’ve hurt myself and how I’ve hurt the people around me, such as my teammates, coaches and people who trusted me – I’m disappointed in that.”

Jackson did not address what it was that actually got him suspended for four games with the media, but he did apologize before the entire team on Wednesday morning for let his team down.

“Not only being a starter, but coming into this season being looked at as a leader on this defense with experience,” Jackson said. “That’s the thing I’m disappointed myself with the most.”

Jackson will get a chance to make some big plays to help Tampa Bay’s 31st-ranked defense at Philadelphia when the Buccaneers face Donovan McNabb, DeSean Jackson and the Eagles’ prolific offense, which is ranked seventh in the NFL.

“It’s going to be a test for us,” Jackson said. “I think it’s going to have them in my first game back. I think it’s good for our team. Donovan is a great quarterback and I think it will be a great test for our team.”

Eagles coach Andy Reid said that Tampa Bay’s defense should be improved with Jackson’s possible return to the defensive lineup on Sunday at Philadelphia.

“I have a lot of respect for Tanard Jackson,” Reid said. “Tanard is one of the top safeties in the league. He brings a lot to that group.”
Jackson can’t wait to step on the field and make up for lost time against Philadelphia.

“It will be a lot of fun for me and my teammates,” Jackson said. “Every Sunday watching the games was a low point for me.

“I’m ready. I’m ready for as many snaps as they put me out there for, but that’s out of my control as far as I get on the field.”

Here's a blog site from ex-Buc steve white about the Redskins game. He comments he thinks Gaines is getting switched from left to right to often. Based on how he explains it..he has a point.

Are we supposed to be excited? Ok. Welcome back T-Jack. Too bad the defense is so jacked up it's not going to matter.

T-Jack won't start this game, but they'll likely work him in for a few snaps on defense.

It's tough to say who's spot I would rather see T-Jack take. The angles Sabby takes on tackles are embarrassing. He also gets fooled in pass pro every now and then but I think he has more upside than W. Allen and will continue to get better with more snaps.

For the long term benefit of the team I'd like to see T-Jack replace W. Allen so Allen can go back to leading our special teams unit.

Stretch those legs you will running your ass off chasing wide open receivers with no pass rush.

I don't care what Bates tells you shadow Talib's side of the field, he has been getting torched deep all year.

Come on BucFan47. Alot of people get on you and this is why. Negative, negative, negative. We all know this is a rebuilding year with youth everywhere, including coaching. Give them a chance (2 years) before bashing and complaining after 4 games.
Yes you should be happy and excited to get the teams 2nd best cover guy and the best tackler in the secondary back on the field. This is all about the young guys and seeing who is here for the long haul and he and Talib are the cornerstones of the secondary and have not got to play together this year. It will make a difference.

Anyway, I'm glad he is back and he does make a difference. Personally, I say play him and Will Allen back there together because Sabby just lacks the natural instincts (angles on tackling). At this point I think he can play all he wants and those things don't improve. Either you know the angles to take or you don't. His coverage can improve by coaching the positions he needs to be in though. Either way, Allen is a better cover guy.

I would also like to see Quincy Black assigned to go whereever Brian Westbrook goes this week. Take him out of the game as much as possible. History shows, without him, they are a shell of themsleves.

Any one know when Kyle Moore returns?
I was excited to see what he can bring then he got hurt.

I'm with you there Dcrum35. Put either Geno or Black on Westbrook all day and keep him shut down. Thier recievers are very good but small, so Barber should match up well.

I've had a cracked rib before and I gotta say our plan needs to be get pressure early. One hard hit on McNabb and he will either be out, or stink it up. You simply can't throw the ball with any kinda zip with bruised/cracked ribs.

I'm more concerned with offense this week. JJ is going to feel pressured to take shots downfield after last week, and Philly's defense could have a field day. I jusr hope all our RBs are healthy and we use all three to run the ball 30-40 times.

Go Bucs!

I'm glad TJ is back. I hope he learned his lesson on the suspension. It ain't worth it, young man!
I'm looking for more improvement this weekend.
Go Bucs!!!!

Without a doubt you have to account for Westbrook on the field...that being said I am more concerned with McCoy back there...that kid has really been impressive and showing a lot of burst. lol and after seeing Kolb lighting it up for over what 350yards a game(?) kinda think I would rather see an injured McNabb behind center.

3:34pm, October 7, 2009

bucfan47

Guys, you're forgetting one thing, they don't need McNabb to win this game. He's coming back because they know it's a perfect tune-up game for him to return. There's a very small chance of the game remaining even remotely competitive, and that's if McNabb plays bad and the Bucs not only catch some breaks, but score off the turnovers as well, something that's not likely to happen with Johnson under center.

Kolb can lead them to victory against us, no question in my mind. And that's the difference here. Sure, it helps to have Jackson back, but it's not close to being enough. The Titans secondary is a much better unit overall than what we have here, and you see what's happening to them this year with no pass rush. That's all it boils down too...We don't have a pass rush.

47 - "but score off the turnovers as well, something that's not likely to happen with Johnson under center. "
Uhm, didn't we score 7 off the Campbell turnover?

Really, it's an uphill game on paper to say the least, but they have to play the game.

And dcrum is right about you. "Are we supposed to be excited?" - yes, yes you are. A fan of any team getting one of their better players back would be excited.

4:04pm, October 7, 2009

bucfan47

Again, that was against the deadskins. I want to see the turnovers against Philly. I just don't think Washington is in the same class right now on the offensive side of the ball. They are in a complete mess offensively with their head coach calling the shots..

We did turn the ball over on the 8 yard line, and scored.

But again, I'm not going to get overly excited about Jackson's return. The defense is 31st without him, still in the bottom 2/3 with him.

pewterpirate99

Yes I too am excited to have Tjak back, but I don't think it's going to make that much difference due to the fact that we have no pass rush. Remember before beating us, the Redskins lost to the LIONS!!!!!!!

Haha!!

Whoever thinks the return of Tjack is a ho-hum event because the defense is too terrible just doesn't know footabll at all. He's right there in talent with Ruud and Talib - thinking he won't make a difference is stupidity at its finest.

While not there yet - TJack is one of the few Bucs with legitimate Pro-Bowl potential RIGHT NOW.

Tanard is infinitely better at run support than Sabby or will allen, is a fantastic tackler who always takes proper angles, and has the smats and experience to cut down on the deep mistakes the bucs have been making every game.

Does he make the Bucs a top ten defense - no. But he certainly makes them a hell of a lot better than 31st.

A lot of reels show DeShaun Jackson abusing the middle. Hopefully Tanard can put a stop to that this weekend.

Bucfan 47 ,you have infuriated me at points... but credit where its due. You call for 0-16 Bucs , you know better man , give Rah a little credit . They will sneak up on one or two teams.
You called the tanking though so (hat tipped) at this point with a loss to the skins ...ugh the Bucs getting four wins is less likely than a quadriplegic climbing Everest with a person who will get a billion dollars if said quad doesn't make it.....
However, the D showed heart last week , The head coach needs to learn how to make that a permanent situation.

P.S For those that espouse "I hope T-jax learned his lesson." The guy smoked pot !!!, He didn't slaughter maim or defile what shred of human decency we have left for profit or fun . And then LIE about it to the boss.
No he used a substance up until 1937 was used the world over since BEFORE the time of Jesus.
Leonard Little crashed into and killed Susan Gutweiler.
Vick? Give me a rational thought that can explain that piece of garbage that tries to pass himself off as a man.
Yeah T-jax learn your lesson....don't get caught .
The NFL and its sponsors(beer companies), don't like legitimate healthy competition .
The fact that Jackson harmed no soul with intent, yet he faces on the ball field this week a man who harmed countless with intent, again for fun and profit.
Speaks volumes of both our culture and country.
Come what may on sundays .
T-jax medicated , Vick murdered, if Vick scores the winning points the Bucs still win , no end justifies that mean.

Bucs could have traded for super safety Ed Reed and BF47, who has admitted he's no longer a fan, would find something negative about it. No, we're not foolish enough to think one player will make that big a difference but it sure won't hurt.

It will make an even bigger difference when Faine returns.

5:58am, October 8, 2009

bucfan47

FilmBuc - I think the defense is improving somewhat, although it helps to play struggling offense. We don't get a struggling offense this week, but for the rest of the season, with or without Jackson, with or without Ruud, or anyone else, the defense in all likelihood is just not capable of finishing better than 25 (+/- ) overall. It might finish 27, it might finish 23, but I think we've seen enough of the defense through four games to realize they just don't have enough chemistry or the right personnel to make this scheme work. They just don't.

8:44am, October 8, 2009

bucfan47

FilmBuc - Again bud, it's not stupid to think we're not going to improve overall with him. We don't have a pass rush. We could have Ed Reed (as scubog kindly points out) and yes, it would be exciting from the standpoint that he's a better player overall than Will Allen, and he can fly around making more plays, but it is what it is...

Not even Ed Reed could make trips to the Pro Bowl every single year without the D-line in front of him effectively stopping the run and getting after the QB. There's no question Jackson has talent, no one is arguing that, but my frustration stems from the lack of quality guys on the defense, combined with no experience.

You guys are fooling yourself by buying into them becoming dominant in year 1 of this new scheme. You just are. You're also fooling yourself into thinking we're going to see many games this year in which teams are held to 17 points.

That will prove to be the exception, not the rule for this defense. The D will continue to allow 25+ points per game throughout the entire season, and that's exactly why I will continue to argue against Josh Johnson leading this team. He's not capable of producing 30+ points of offense for this team. He's just not ready right now, and look back at the previous article from PR, the players agree with that assessment as well.

That's what most of you don't understand. But you know, it's as long as it's exciting it's ok to lose, right? lol

FilmBuc

Bucfan,

Of course I do not think that the bucs will be a top defense this year. I said that clearly in my post. I agree with you wholeheartedly that the number one area that needs fixing is the dline. It should be etched in stone that the Bucs go DT, DE in the first 2 rounds of next year's draft. Without question.

But Tanard is the best player in the Bucs secondary. Yes, better than Talib. I know you respect the opinions of national sportswriters: no less than ESPN's Pat Yasinkas and SI's Peter King have echoes that sentiment.

The two things he helps most in: run support and cutting down on the mistakes and missed assignments that have plagued the defense on at least one occassion each game this season.

Sadly, I think it will take him a game or two to be in top form. But look for him to be a major stablizing influence on the defense that allows us to grab several games later in the season.
