The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to tinker with their defensive end position in hope of generating a more consistent pass rush. On Monday, the team claimed rookie defensive end Michael Bennett off waivers from Seattle and waived rookie offensive lineman Marc Dile.

The Buccaneers are continuing to look for ways to upgrade their pass rush and claimed rookie defensive end Michael Bennett off waivers from Seattle on Monday. The 6-foot-3, 274-pound Bennett was waived on October 11 to make room for defensive tackle Kyle Williams after signing with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M on April 27, 2009.

Bennett, whose brother Martellus is a tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, had an underwhelming senior season for the Aggies where he recorded 42 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He didn’t help his draft stock at the NFL Scouting Combine where he ran a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash, yet he did bench 225 pounds 24 times and post a 31-inch vertical jump.

Bennett made Seattle’s 53-man roster by having an impressive preseason where he recorded nine tackles, five quarterback hurries, two sacks, deflected a pass and recovered a fumble for the Seahawks. That undoubtedly caught the Buccaneers’ attention and prompted the team to claim him off waivers.

Since the start of the season when rookie Kyle Moore suffered groin and knee injuries, Tampa Bay has continued to target the defensive end position as an area worth upgrading as it signed defensive end Tim Crowder, who has earned playing time in the rotation, in addition to signing former Penn State standout Maurice Evans, who has been on and off the Bucs roster in recent weeks. Evans was released on Saturday to create a roster spot for free safety Tanard Jackson, who was activated from the exempt/commissioner permission list after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse program.

To make room for Bennett on the active roster, the team waived rookie guard Marc Dile, who played collegiately at the University of South Florida, which is in Tampa.

Whats the point?
Who's snaps is he going to get?

Wait... this guy already played for us... Michael Bennett was a running back, now he switches positions? No I'm just kidding, hopefully this M. Bennett will give us more production... but for the defensive side.

Evans,Bennett,Crowder can'tdo worse then what we're getting now. Stylez gets closer to the cookie jar then he does the QB, and I don't know if Gaines was hurting this week but he got pushed around all day. Give anybody a chance right now.

the guy did have a pretty impressive preseason for a rook...lets see what he can do.

what is really hard to swallow is .....two more losses and we are officially eliminated from the Weed Eater You Suck Bowl...agains Florida State!!!

I could get excited if he replaces Adams. Now that would be fun to watch. Maybe Adams could mentor him and teach him to watch the play from behind the Quarterback until it is over.

" Give us your tired, your poor, your hungry...your huddled masses....and your players we don't have to pay much"

There I fixed it.

help me understand this. bucs had arguably one of the best defensive coaches ever. Kiffin was with the bucs for 13 years. Clearly he influenced the type of defensive players that were drafted to make his defense.
Next, the glazers bring in a new defensive coordinator who tries to implement an entirely different defensive scheme. Would it not sound utterly illogical to make these defenders change their style of play. Kiffin has these guys doing something for 13 years and all this gets scrapped because the new coordinator prefers a different style.
did Bates not look at his players and say "weak defensive line, does not get pressure on QB."
in a time of transition it seems to me you try to change game play slowly as our pass coverage is not used to bump and run coverage. Is it a surprise that we are getting burned on deep passes. Our defense cannot get to the QB so he has all day for receivers to get open. And they do get open. And the opponent scores.

i know this is totally off topic but whehn will the NFL change this craptastic BRady rule...omg many games are now being significantly altered because a defensive player falls and grazes a QBs knee. the Colt's game was going to be over anyway but the Colt's got some gift calls at the end of the first half to basically give them a td drive. one play KVB did a spin move and stumbled and fell into manning's foot but he got knocked off balance which was why he fell into manning.

Also, let's play Talib at WR he can catch passes lol.

so tampa should have gotten braylon, at least we would have a playmaker to go with caddy, AB, and K2 and for a 3rd and 5th rd pick that is a steal.

Mark Sanchez and Chad Henne sure looked good tonight on MNF. Hate to admit it, but they looked much better than JJ. Neither qb tonight had any picks (I don't think).

I support the Bucs on their search for some well needed pressure. Keep searching, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut. At least the constant search for an upgrade at the end position will chronically place the current players on notice.

burger40 - with the same logic as Talib at WR, I also like Clayton at RT, because "he can block," and has yet to be called for a false start this year. - Maybe after Ronde has gone, Mac can play the nickle, but he is not getting it done outside. The Bucs really need a corner now. Sabby is also not showing the consistant play this team needs in the secondary.

Word is Bucs working out Matt Jones to replace Clayton......

Where is the inside infor Pewter Report>>>>>??????????

Mark Sanchez and Chad Henne were also not running for their lives from blitz after blitz after blitz with no O-line blocking and recievers that drop everything thrown their way! JJ had maybe a split second to get the ball off every play!

8:13am, October 13, 2009

ncbucfan

I've said all along that they should be signing Matt Jones. Off field issues or not he is a much better upgrade that Michael Clayton! Matt Jones will actually catch the ball every now and then!

8:16am, October 13, 2009

cremdonado

Matt Jones ?!-You cant be serious..The reason why he isnt on a team is cuz he cant catch...The blow charges are a non issue if a guy has great receiving talent, that apparently is not the case with Matt..He and Clayton are pretty even when it comes to drops-he is no upgrade unless he has been practicing.

We need a route runner not a line chaser, the Matt deal could be a mistake..Only upside it gets Micheal"I shouldnt be in this league"Clayton off the field.....The only thing he does kind of well is block...

Matt Jones....just what we need..another Jax cast-off. The one we have didn't do so well. I'm all for giving guys a chance, but he can't lay off the blow. Suspension waiting to happen. He can't catch anyway.

What is the deal with K. Moore any way. Something has to give with Gaines, this dude makes me mad everytime I watch him. Another thing that makes me mad is, when I watch other games, everything goes smooth, like last night both teams actually looked like they knew what they were doing. We have to get pressure with the front four until that gets done, I am all for bringing any and everybody in.

GO BUCS!!!!

What will it take to get T.O. down here, he is on the trading block!!!!

Matt Jones is by no means going to be the savior of our team, but I hope we sign him. He has shown he can be great, and he has had his carrer flash before his eyes. He might just have a new outlook and be a much more motivated guy. Look Braylon Edwards last night. Sometimes guys just need a new start with a new team.

Worse case scenerio he stinks and we drop him in the off season, but right now I think he is an upgrade over Clayton or Stovall. Best case scenerio is he converts to TE and stays here for the next 6 years. He is 6"6" 230lbs. That's a nice big target for our young QBs.

JDouble

Even if we don't sign Matt Jones, I have an idea for our coaches. Everyone is going to stack the line with 8 in the box and blitz the hell out of us....so we need to think outside the box.

We need to start lining up in goalline formation a good majority of the time. Basicly a tight I-form formation using Winslow, Stevens, Gilmore, and Bryant/Jones as TEs. Graham as FB, wit Ward/Willaims as HB. This big man set will allow us to run the ball better, and allow the pass action to work affectively. It should also cause the blitzes to come from the edges rather than up the middle.
