Bryant Working For Future, Explaining Past

Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant spoke to the media on Friday about his suspension from college football. Bryant talked about his relationship with Deion Sanders and agent Eugene Parker. Bryant is training for the NFL Combine in Tampa, and talked about playing against CB Aqib Talib and QB Josh Freeman.

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant met with the media on Friday for the first time since he announced his intentions to enter the NFL Draft. Bryant was suspended by the NCAA for the majority of the 2009 football season after he lied to an NCAA investigator.

Bryant admitted to lying to the NCAA about his relationship with former NFL player Deion Sanders. Some claimed that Sanders was setting up Bryant to be a client of agent Eugene Parker. Sanders and Parker both had a relationship with current San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree when he came out of Texas Tech and into the 2009 NFL Draft.

Bryant said he respected the decision made by the NCAA, but felt like it was too strong of a penalty. During his collegiate career, Bryant said he never received any gifts from Sanders or any agent or booster. Bryant explained his side of the story regarding his suspension from college football.

"Deion is my mentor, he's a great guy," said Bryant. "[Eugene Parker] is my agent and just to speak on that a little bit, I just want people to know that with Eugene and Deion, neither one talked to me about each other. Deion never talked to me about Eugene Parker. The first time I met Eugene Parker was about four weeks ago. I just felt like the NCAA thought that there was something going on, but I didn't even know [Parker] then. They thought that Deion was a runner for him, but it wasn't anything like that. Deion just wanted to be a mentor and make sure everything was right. I felt like there was nothing wrong with that.

"The NCAA, the way I look at it, they are like the feds. You can't change their vision. They are going to go with what they want to go with, so there is nothing I can do about that so I just move on. I made a mistake because I lied. I regret what I did and I respect their decision.''

In his college career, Bryant had 147 catches for 2,425 yards and 29 touchdowns. His best season was his sophomore year when he caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns. Three games into his sophomore season Bryant was suspended for the rest of the season.

"When I found out the NCAA wanted to talk to me I was shocked," said Bryant. "I was nervous, and when he asked about the situation I told him. The way they were asking me if I had any relationships with Deion Sanders, he made it sound like I did something wrong, and he asked me if I went to Deion Sanders' house and I told him no, which I really did, and I came back and told him before it blew all up that I had visited Deion Sanders' house."

Bryant is preparing for the NFL scouting combine in Tampa, Florida at the Saddlebrook Resort. He said he will work out for NFL scouts at Oklahoma State's pro day, and he will do everything he is asked to do at the combine and at workouts.

"In some ways I feel like I have things to prove," Bryant said. "I want to show everybody I still have it."

While training in Tampa, Bryant has had his eye on the Buccaneers. The Bucs are in the market for help at the receiver position in the draft and free agency, and Bryant is considered to be the top receiver in the 2010 NFL Draft. Bryant has some familiarity going against some of the Buccaneers. In 2007 as a freshman, Bryant had eight receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown going against future Tampa Bay cornerback Aqib Talib, who played for the University of Kansas.

"I was matched up with him a lot," Bryant said. "Our starting receiver, Adarius Bowman, went down. I felt like I had to step up and showcase my talent. [Talib] was big and physical. I knew he could play. I felt like if I could show people what I could do against him and be successful everything would be great."

Bryant also watched current Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman when Oklahoma State played Kansas State in 2007, and when Bryant studied his Big 12 opponents.

"I watched him play at Kansas State," Bryant said. "My first time knowing about Josh was when we played them my freshman year. I felt like he was a great player. I still say to this day, and not taking away from nobody else, but I'm saying back in college he just didn't have anyone to throw to. I just felt like that took away from his ability."

He won't be around for us, but I think he makes a great pro.

dont be supprised if we take him @ #3, Raheem's job rests in the development of Freeman, what better way to develop him than taking a Physical freak like Dez. Hes going to light it up @ the combine and Pro day, he will sky rocket up boards and it just might be enough for us to decide Defense can be addressed in round 2

It will be a disappointment for me if the Bucs pick a player with a suspension by the NCAA in his resume. The Glazers would be wise to issue an order that says " do not waste your time scouting players who have character problems". If you do, you are out of here. Lying is a character flow by most standards. Some may think it won't happen again. Good Luck. Far too many options . Fact is Freeman threw far too many passes that were uncatchable. The receivers were certainly not the entire problem. Let Dez be a great Pro for somebody else.

Anyone that brings Deon Sanders along as well isnt worth the baggage. The same thing that happened with Crabtree is going to happen with him. Not worth the headache.

We arent in a draft position to make him a Buc....Lets focus on the talent that is avail. where we are slated to draft...

He wouldn't be my pick at #3, but neither was Josh Freeman and that seems to have been a great pick (let's hope at least). If he is catching over 1000 yards and 10 TD's a season, then it will be a great pick and I'll claim that I wanted him all along! Freeman needs weapons, I doubt we will re-sign AB, so it would be a logical pick. The "character issues" in this case are in fact not character issues at all. The NCAA loves to flex their muscles and come down hard on people, and that's exactly what they did in this case. First of all, EVERY big time player has runners for agents. It's just part of the business. He lied because he was scared and he panicked. Can anyone on this board honestly say they have never lied when they were scared? So we shouldn't draft players that lie? Good luck with that draft philosophy. In order to have a great QB, you must have a great receiver (find me one that doesn't), and if we lose AB, who else do we have? It's going to cost an arm and a leg to get Boldin, plus he seems to be a little injure prone. Stroughter is a nice player, but not a #1. Live most long time Bucs fans, I love defense. However, I wouldn't mind a little offense every now and then too. I would hope that if we do draft Bryant, everyone gives the kid a chance and hopes for his success. That may be wishful thinking.

cremdonado, how are we not in position to draft him, he will be there @ #3 certainly, once workouts being i guarantee hes going to be a top 10 if not top 5 player, is it really a reach for us (a WR talent starving team) to grab him @ 3rd overall? not at all.

twodog, people with "character flaws" are not a bad thing, people change, what would have happened if we didn't take Sapp because of his "character flaw"? he is one of the greatest Bucs of all time.

Yeah lets just draft berry he is going to be real good for years to come no DT in the first if we cant get Suh. or just trade back and draft the best player on the board.

Don't be surprised if the Bucs trade down to get him and get another pick.Alot of people forgot how good this guy is.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to take him.Bryant wont be back and who knows what is going to happen to Clayton.I say trade down and take him..especially if we could get another second rd pick. This is a deep draft. With the second pick take Price out of UCLA.

u know how nice it would be to see our franchise QB having to different Bryants to throw to! build the team around Josh!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Dez, and he is head and shoulders above all other receivers in the draft. But, if we take him with the #3 pick we will need to address our DT needs later in the draft, and that would be a huge mistake IMO, unless we pick up a three technique DT in free agency. Price won't be there in the second unless he has an awful combine, or gets hurt. He is the third rated DT in the draft.

I'm guessing we will be looking at upgrading WR after the first round. I really like Mardy Gilyard with pick 2b, or Dexter McCluster in the fourth.

I need to see him do some drills at the combine in feb to make him our first pick of 2010.

I say we trade down a few spots, get a 2nd and take this guy with our 1st rounder. This draft is deep with great defensive talent. That's why we draft Dez because he is light years better than any other WR and can be a contributor to this franchise and the development of Freeman from day one. After him, we can go all defense you want. Just pick this guy up and get more draft picks in the process.

Assuming that he grades out as a top 10 or top 5 pick after all is said and done, and Suh isn't available, it would actually make sense to pick him at #3 (or perhaps trade down to #8 or whatever). BEST TALENT AVAILABLE, yes?

I think if Suh is gone, I'd lean towards taking Bryant vs. Berry. In the end, assuming Antoio Bryan isn't resigned, Dez Bryant could end up being "revenue neutral" in the grand scheme of things. Between Dez, Stroughter and K2, we'd have some solid receivers on the field. Add an O-Line that functions as they SHOULD (they have the ability, they underperformed) and a couple of RB's with varied skill-sets (Caddy, Graham, Smith, Huggins maybe) and I think we could look pretty good on offense.

Would we miss out on some of the top defensive talent? Yeah, almost certainly. Is defensive talent a BIGGER need? That's subjective. Ravens defense has been really, really good for quite a while - no consistency in their ability to be successful in the playoffs. Can our defense ultimately be built from lower profile, later-round picks, particularly with a young, energetic D-Coordinator/Head Coach?

None of us has a crystal ball (Hell, I agreed with Adams and had no problem with him over Megatron), but I could understand if this is how things shake out - it is intriguing.

PS Don't anybody tell me you KNOW, else with an obvious passion for football (ie, posting on this board) you'd be employed by an NFL team already.

This has a Crabtree hold out written all over it. I believe they have the same agent and I know they have the same egotistical mentor in Deon Sanders. The guys talent is not questionable its the people that surround him.

I SAY TAKE DEZ RD1 N ANOTHER WR RD 4 TOO. we can address safety with FA antione bethea or i pray NICK COLLINS,oj, etc, even darren sharper, proven pro bowlers who'll be cheaper than berry.

another option be trading both our two's to get back in rd1 taking price meaning both dez bryant n brian price in rd1

Maybe a trade with Seattle allows us to go Dez Bryant (WR) with #6 and Brian Price (DT) at #14

Our history of drafting WRs make me think there is no way in hell we should consider drafting Dez Bryant in the first. I'd much rather us swing a trade for Brandon Marshall, that has already shown he is a top 5 WR in this league. He is a diva, but so are 95% of all the great recievers. Dez Bryant probably will be too.

Besides, we need to draft Suh, McCoy, or Price in the first round.

2:30pm, January 16, 2010

pinkstob

I don't think Dominik would take Bryant with such a high 1st round pick. Dez Bryant is simply making the right business decision by listening to his agent who is telling him to use the media to sell how good of a fit he would make in Tampa.

The Rams and Lions don't need a WR bad enough to use the1st or 2nd overall pick on Dez so the Bucs are the best target. Nice try but I Dominik won't bite at the #3 spot. If we do trade down, then we can talk turkey.
