Bucs Hire Yarber As New Receivers Coach

Eric Yarber served as a wide receivers coach with several different teams, including Arizona State (SunDevilGridiron.com)

UPDATED: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Eric Yarber to serve as their new wide receivers coach as first reported by Pewter Report. Yarber, who played wide receiver for the Redskins from 1986-87, has spent several years as a WRs coach, most recently with Arizona State. Tim Holt was hired to be an offensive assistant.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Eric Yarber as their new wide receivers coach, as PewterReport.com first reported.

Earlier this week, Bucs head coach Raheem Morris informed several candidates that interviewed for the job, including former Bucs WR Ike Hilliard, of the team's decision to go with Yarber, who has significant experience coaching wide receivers at both the college and pro levels.

Yarber, 46, played wide receiver for the Washington Redskins from 1986-87. The ‘Skins won the Super Bowl in Yarber's final year with the team. Yarber originally entered the NFL as a 12th-round pick out of Idaho.

His resume' includes stints as a wide receivers coach with several different teams, including Arizona State (2007-09), Washington (2005-06), the San Francisco 49ers (2003-04), Oregon State (2000-02) and UNLV (1997).

Yarber got his first shot in the coaching ranks in 1996 as a secondary coach with Idaho. He has also worked as an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks (1998) and running backs coach at Oregon State (1999).

Tampa Bay's wide receiver coaching position vacancy was created at the end of the 2009 regular season when the Bucs and WRs coach Richard Mann, who had been with the team since 2002, mutually decided to part ways.

The Bucs hired former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt to fill their open quarterbacks coaching job earlier this week. Tampa Bay's coaching staff is complete, after the team announced the hiring of Van Pelt, Yarber, and offensive assitant Tim Holt.

Chris Mosley has been named the defensive assistant coach. During the 2009 season, Mosley served as an assistant offensive line coach.

Doesn't look like the guy can hold a job more than 2 years. I am wondering how he proved himself so much that the Bucs are giving him a shot though our coaching staff might not be around in 2 years and he probably came cheap. I still would have Liked Ike.

Just think CBA and owner positioning. All the teams are doing almost the same things.

I wonder what these people so disappointed in the last two hires were expecting. There's no such thing as a lifetime QB coach or WR coach. These positional coaching jobs are stepping stones for these guys. They are ultimately working towards coord. or HC positions. I like both signings. We brought in two guys that played the position they are coaching. They have experience coaching at the NFL level which is obviously important. We all know the name Ike Hilliard but what does he bring to the table as a coach. Before calling these bad hires, I'm at least going to find out what I can about these guys!

There might be something to the No-CBA/potential lockout thing (ie, maybe they're taking some chances, leaning towards some hungrier coaching candidates/players to see what works and what doesn't). In theory, there might not be a competitive team until the 2012 season if 2011 is shut down.

Some fans are not going to be happy no matter what. I would be willing to say that most fans didn't even know who was our WR coach last year (until he left), and even less could name another WR coach in the league. It's hilarious that people want the Bucs to hire ex-players to coach all the positions (Ike Hilliard, Keenan McCardell, Brad Johnson, and Derrick Brooks), all of whom have zero NFL coaching experience. Yet these same people complain that our coaching staff is too young and inexperienced??????? Just because someone played in the NFL does not mean they will be a great coach. I know the Glazers are cheap, but it's not like a WR coach commands millions of dollars. Like MOBucs said, it's just a stepping stone (entry level coaching) job, so you are not going to know most of the candidates. Relax and find something else to complain about.

It's a crime that Morris & Dominik didn't ask the PR fans who to hire first since it's obvious that the experts here should all be running their own franchise. To all of you who do nothing but complain every time a move is announced: STFU.

I have never heard of him. I would have preferred Ike, but we will see what this guy can do i guess. My main question about him is why cant (or doesnt) he stay in a place for more than 2 years?

I am guessing that the hire is the Doug Williams connection while he was playing for the Redskins since they were on the same team? Other than that, nothing really stands out here. It's just a coach hired by a team to coach wide receivers.

Nothing else can surprise me with these owners.

FLYBOYDALLAS - And like wise to you and your sort, everyone on this board who laddels the Glazers/Ream Moreass/Dummynicks kool-aid drenched balls with their tongue in a habitual fashion and loves every move they make even though they've shown they DO NOT know what they are doing: STFU!

6:51pm, February 3, 2010

I don't ever remember one coach to leave the sideline and suit up and play ball , granted some coaches are better than others but coaches coach and players play . I don't care who's coaching our wideouts this season , if Michael Clayton on the field he's gonna drop passes . Once again coaches coach and players play .

7:15pm, February 3, 2010

Hawaiian Buc

I don't think anyone on this board, myself included, agrees with everything this regime has done. They have made many mistakes, and those mistakes are obvious. However, I would also say they have made many good decisions as well, many of which were not popular at the time. If anyone expected a youth movement and the playoffs in the same season, they are truly uneducated on what it takes to build a NFL team. I don't care who the coach and GM is, it doesn't happen overnight (see New England and Indianapolis). It becomes a little irritating to a die-hard fan to hear other fans complain and bicker about ever decision this franchise makes, particularly the ones they have absolutely no knowledge of a better solution (i.e. the best WR coach available). Nobody is asking to love every decision made by this franchise, but you don't have to hate every decision.

Hawaiian Buc, for me it is about getting coaches with experience; real experience. We can't have a bunch young players and coaches with little experience. We have to get to some kind of balance here. Right now, I feel like the coaches are less experienced than the players.
I am hoping that Pewter Report in a couple months will be able to tell us that all coaches and players off season have been doing what is necessary to make our team winners again. There's a lack of leadership at coaching right now. Just my opinion.
Go Bucs! Get better!

7:49pm, February 3, 2010

Hawaiian Buc

Horse, I totally agree that we need some coaches with experience (would also be nice if we had more players with some experience), that's why I'm confused as to why so many people are down on this hire, and they would have preferred to hire Ike or Keenan McCardell. I'd be lying if I had ever heard of him, but he seems to be very experienced. The fact that he has had many jobs doesn't bother me, because who has ever heard of a "lifer" WR coach. I do think we will (and should be) much improved next year, and I choose to support the team until I am proven wrong. I am also a realist, and I realize that we are not going to be in the Super Bowl anytime soon, it will take time.

8:33pm, February 3, 2010

buclover1988

im prolly gonna get a lot of flak for saying this, but i disagree that we dont have leadership on this caching staff. theres a reason raheem is the head coach, and im starting to really really get fired up about him. when he took over the defense, our defense got significantly better. he isnt afraid and wont hesitate to put all the pressure on himself, and thats a quality that leaders must have. we can rag on him about the cooridnator issue, but its already come out that he really didnt get a say in either hire. i like someone that can own up to mistakes even if its not entirely there fault and change them before they become worse. jim bates didnt even do what raheem wanted. but i believe, and this is just my opinion, that they stayed with bates in respect of the glazers and to not do away with both of their decisions right off the bat. and when it comes to position coaches haha it is funny to see how many ppl get mad. i like the hire of van pelt and yarber. van pelt will actually have a talented qb to work with now and not trent edwards and ryan fitzpatrick lol no offense to them, but neither is all that talented, edwards has a good arm, thats about it. josh has everything you need, he just needs to work on accuracy and reading defenses, both of which can be taught. and yarber will be fine, i really like that he has coached at both levels and has solid coaching experience which i thought thats what everyone wanted on here lol but i guess no matter what not everyone will be satisfied. once we start upgrading and the talent we will be fine, we will do that through the draft, im really excited!! GO BUCS I BELIEVE!!!!!!

8:52pm, February 3, 2010

i meant to say once we start uprgrading the talent, not "once we start upgrading and the talent" haha sorry.

8:57pm, February 3, 2010

buclover1988 - well said.

As far as the bucs new coaches are concerned, I tend to like the fact that Van Pelt wasn't a superstar player. I say that because a lot of your better coaches were mediocre players who had to study the game in order to succeed.

I learned that in baseball, Whitey Herzog was a tremendous manager for the St. Louis Cardinals. As a player he was only average.

Let's give it a year and see what happens.

Also I heard the Glaziers may sell off part of their debt (manu stadium) or be in the market for a Manu partner. We can only hope.

I do not believe the Glaziers are bad owners. They are just owners who overextended and made financial mistakes. They are in a bind right now. If they weren't they would be spending. Let's just hope that in the long run they do what is right for the team - sell it or ManU.

The bottom line is we can bring in the best WR coach in the NFL and it wont make a dfference. Our WRs cant catch, run routes, or get seperation from defenders. What we need is an upgrade in talent at the WR position.

We were promised a change in the right direction and I have yet to see action, by managment, that supports with that promise. While I watch other teams making significant changes, I cant help but complain about these seemingly mediocre aquisitions.

You say people like me are against every move managment makes, but thats simply just not true. I have always been behind Raheem and his retainment. I was in favor of drafting Freeman, Miller, Moore and Stroughter. And while I was against the youth movment, at the time, I do realize it is something we must undergo if we want to return to greatness. I challenge you to find a post from me that says otherwise.

You think you are the only die-hard Bucs fan? This has been my team since I fell in love with the sport, buddy. I just dropped a couple thousand on this team for a pair of season tickets, and I holler TAMPA BAY every weekend. And as far as I am concerned, during the seaosn we are the best team in the NFL. So don't lecture as if I am a fairweather fan, please.

11:19pm, February 3, 2010

Hawaiian Buc

TampaBucks05, I have no idea what you are talking about, I wasn't calling you anything. I don't even see where you posted here, or anywhere for that matter. I have no idea who you are or what you like or dislike, and I never said you were a fair weather fan. I was talking about those who criticize every move the organization makes. Obviously that is not you, so I'm not sure why you think it was directed at you. I have never, and will never, call out any one particular person on this board. All I said was there were a lot of people that complain about everything the organization does, and they are just "piling on". I know for a fact that fans (including myself) know much less about running an organization than we think we do.

As far as change goes, I really don't know what you expected. There aren't too many "sexy" picks when it comes to QB and WR coaches, the majority of the (legitimate) candidates are people neither of us have ever heard of. I can't think of any big hires any organization has made yet (it's a stretch, but maybe Mike Martz going to Chicago. In fact, most teams have done next to nothing because of the possibility of a lockout in 2011). I'm not really sure what you are expecting, but it's really hard to judge until the season begins. As far as change within the players, it's too early for that. Free agency and the draft is still a ways away, so nobody has done anything yet. I guarantee you next year's team will be much different from last year's team, let's just all hope it translates into more than 3 wins.

So much wisdom from the sound off brigade, I forgot what the artical said. Those of you who wanted Ike or Keenan. you didn't do good in school did you? Malcontents and poor performers should be culled out of the ranks and not rehired. All I remember about McCardell is him being a big pain in the ass.

5:55am, February 4, 2010

Funny how many of you criticize the hire without knowing anything about the man. At this point I don't think it's fair to say whether it was good or bad. We'll see. Neither Hilliard nor McCardell have coached a day in the NFL yet hiring either of them would have been praised. Of course the $ card gets thrown out as the reason.

To me it's the players not the coach that wins games. It would take a magician, not a coach to turn our group of WR's into the 2002 WR corps.

I'm glad we got someone with a lot of experience at this position as opposed to promoting an offensive assistant. Until I learn more about this guy that's about all I can say.

I'm also glad we hired an additional offensive and defensive assistant. The owners didn't have to do that but Olsen complained about things like getting the things he needed organized for meetings (probably PowerPoint slides and things of that nature). Now the assistants can do this for Olsen and Morris and they can concentrate more or game planning and coaching.

Go Bucs!!

From the Tampa Tribune:

"With the 49ers, Yarber guided Pro Bowler Terrell Owens to a 1,000-yard season in his first year and played an integral part in the development of rookie wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, who led the team with a 15.1-yard average per catch in 2004.

Yarber was also a member of Dennis Erickson's staff at Oregon State from 1999-2002. He coached the receivers for three seasons after switching from running backs coach following the 1999 season. During Yarber's tenure, the Beavers sent two receivers to the NFL in 2001, as Chad Johnson was a second-round selection of Cincinnati and T.J. Houshmandzadeh was the seventh-round pick of the Bengals."

We had 1 bad year... big F'ing deal every team has a real bad year once in a while. You might not like the hire but guess what?!?! Amen Iprock22 !!!!!!! Hey JoeG31 blah blah, why don't you just take a deep breath, take a step back , and FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!!!!!!!!! Listen here you used tampon, as fan$ and SEASON TICKET HOLDERS we have every right to bitch and complain as much as we want when we see the putrid mess that this organization has put on the field. It's been mistake after mistake after mistake and it isn't looking any better. This team is going cheap, they ARE NOT going to spend any money in free agency and since they won't have a floor to spend to, you'll really see how cheap the Glazers can and WILL be! I know, I know.......they're rebuilding through the draft and that's the "smart" way of doing it, WHATEVER!!!!! You need to have a mix of GOOD ( unlike the crap we have here) veteran players to go along with all these "awesome" ( extreme sarcasm) draft selections the Bucs will make in this up coming draft. I'm really interested in hearing what all you "positive rah rah go Bucs " butt blind fans will have to say next season when our beloved team goes 3-13 again or 4-12. I have NO FAITH or CONFIDENCE in this organization, not anymore. Starting with the Glazers, the front office , and ending with all of the coaching staff. That's why I will not renew tickets. The Glazers DON'T care about winning, they care about making and saving money. It's like the Glazers ( the moron twins, not Malcolm) took lessons from Hugh Culverhouse and Vince Namoli on how to run a franchise into the ground. As far as jumping on the Saints bandwagon......FUCK the Saints!!!!!! I hope the Colts kick the shit out of them!

Iprock22 I also agree with you regarding these computer tough guys. They don't have the testicular fortitude to say that shit to our faces, so they type away hiding behind their key boards and computer screens.

7:06pm, February 4, 2010

FLBoyInDallas

Yep...we should take a poll of season ticket holders and PR whiners each time a front office decision needs to be made by the Bucs. We can have an organization run by democratic vote. That would turn out awesomely wouldn't it?

Or, better yet, instead of allowing ALL PR whiners & season ticket holders to vote we should only allow those who shout the loudest and insult others the most to have a vote. We'd have a real winner on our hands then.

If not then dont renew season tickets. Im sure your pea brain can figure that one out. Iprick... i use symbols because i refuse to come on here and make a jack@ss out of myself like you keep doing repeatedly. This article is to keep the REAL fans informed not to let little boys come here and whine like girls about every single move they make. You have a right to your opinion... but what your spewing is nothing more than hateful BS... your the same idiots who post negative hateful comments about everything the bucs do on EVERY article... news flash this was a rebuilding year you morons, what the heck did you expect?... a superbowl?... your both pathetic and anyone that comes here only to bash the bucs every move because of 1 bad season is just as sad... Theres a difference between hateful BS and 'your opinion' and as far as "the errors of your ways go" i was just stating my unbias opinion... your odviously to ignorant to see any errors in your ways. And FLBoy, Im pretty sure there both juvenile, mentally for sure.

All I know is, just about anybody would've been better than Richard Mann. Mann was only good with veteran receivers it seemed. Hey Joegirl ....what makes you the supreme DICTATOR to tell people what opinion they may express, when to get off this site or go support another team. If we pay our money for tickets and this site we can express ours like it or not. To express an opinion is one thing, to think you are a DICTATOR like you and a few others do I say FU.

^ This.

And for the information of the Supreme 1s, this is a fan site where we pay for information (the article) and a space (the boards) to express our opinions on said information and discuss it. Its a product I'm paying for, therefore I get to hve an opinion.

Also, the Bucs are also product I am paying for, I buy tix, PPV games on TV/online, jerseys, hats, panties or my GF (yep), and various other Bucs crap. Therefore since it is a product I am paying for, I as a consumer, again have every right to express my satisfaction/dissatisfaction with said product.

And I'm juvenile for suggesting that you guy won't say this type of stuff to our face and that somehow makes me juvenile in turn? Intersting. Because how threatened some of you get by dissenting opinions such as mine, and your overwhelming desire to silence them and to go so far as to say I'm not welcome or within my rights to expressing them is INFINATLEY more juvenile than almos anything else you can do. Sack up, and learn to not get so threatened by a different opinion or when someone challenges yours.....or...dare I say it...you might just be wrong.
