NFL Mock Draft 2/4 |
![]() Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant (Getty) |
With the Senior Bowl over and the underclassmen declared, Pewter Report issues its third mock draft of the year. Who is the new player projected to go number one overall? Who will the Buccaneers take with the third overall pick? Who will Tampa Bay take with its two second-round picks? Find out here.
Pewter Report will continue to update the mock draft as the draft season moves into the combine, pro-days, and team visits. The deadline for the underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft has expired, so the draft eligible players are set. The early entries are marked with a *.
1. St. Louis Rams- Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford *
The Rams passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez. They won't do it again.
2. Detroit Lions- Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh
Suh is the best football player in the draft. Schwartz gets his new Albert Haynesworth.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy *
A trade down is possible. Teams may want to get Clausen in front of Washington. McCoy is the best player available.
4. Washington Redskins- QB Jimmy Clausen *
There are character concerns with him, but Mike Shanahan takes guys like that.
5. Kansas City Chiefs- Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung
GM Scott Pioli has to protect his investment in QB Matt Cassel.
6. Seattle Seahawks- Tennessee S Eric Berry *
Berry is the best player available and the Seahawks could use help on defense.
7. Cleveland Browns- Florida CB Joe Haden *
The Browns grab the best cornerback in the draft.
8. Oakland Raiders- Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan *
Richard Seymour could leave. The Raiders need interior help and pass rush.
9. Buffalo Bills- Maryland OT Bruce Campbell *
His athleticism is off the charts. Buffalo couldn't protect the quarterback.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars- Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant *
The Jags get a weapon, target Tim Tebow in a trade up in round two.
11. Denver Broncos (from Chicago)- Alabama LB Rolando McClain *
Denver breaks Miami's heart and takes best LB in the draft.
12. Miami Dolphins- Alabama DT Terrence Cody
The Dolphins could use a young nose tackle for its 3-4 defense.
13. San Francisco 49ers- Rutgers OT Anthony Davis *
He has some character issues, but Mike Singletary is a master motivator.
14. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver)- Clemson RB C.J. Spiller
The Seahawks could use a game-changer. Spiller is that kind of player.
15. New York Giants- UCLA DT Brian Price*
The Giants need help on their defensive line. Price is a disruptor.
16. Tennessee Titans- South Florida DE Jason Pierre-Paul*
They need a pass rusher. Pierre-Paul is thought highly of by analysts.
17. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina)- Boise State CB Kyle Wilson
He had a great week at the Senior Bowl, and they need cornerback help.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers- Iowa OT Bryan Bulaga*
The Steelers offensive line let Ben Roethlisberger down. Bulaga is their kind of player.
19. Atlanta Falcons- Texas S Earl Thomas *
Atlanta's secondary hurt the team down the stretch. Thomas is a playmaker.
20. Houston Texans- USC S Taylor Mays
Despite a bad Senior Bowl, teams like his tools. He is an overrated prospect.
21. Green Bay Packers- Iowa OG Mike Iupati
The Packers need help along the line. Iupati could start right away for them.
22. Cincinnati Bengals- Florida TE Aaron Hernandez *
The Bengals need more weapons in the passing game. A wide out is possible.
23. New England Patriots- Florida LB Brandon Spikes
The Pats finally replace Junior Seau. Bill Belichick loves Florida's program.
24. Philadelphia Eagles- Florida DE Carlos Dunlap *
The Eagles need to improve their pass rush. Dunlap is a good fit at left end.
25. Baltimore Ravens- Notre Dame WR Golden Tate *
The Ravens could use a young replacement for Derrick Mason.
26. Arizona Cardinals- TCU DE/OLB Jerry Hughes
Arizona could use a pass rusher and Hughes can rush the quarterback.
27. Dallas Cowboys- Oklahoma OT Trent Williams
The Cowboys have an aging offensive line. Williams starts the overhaul.
28. San Diego Chargers- Georgia Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer *
This a great fit. Dwyer is perfect replacement for LaDanian Tomlinson.
29. New York Jets- Illinois WR Arrelious Benn *
The Jets get a weapon for Mark Sanchez to throw to. A CB or OLB are options.
30. Minnesota Vikings- Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee
Cedric Griffin tore an ACL in the playoffs, corner is now a pressing issue.
31. New Orleans Saints- California DT Tyson Alualu
The Saints could use some help up front. Alualu's versatility is a good fit.
32. Indianapolis Colts- Penn State DT Jared Odrick
Odrick had some character issues, but is an excellent athlete.
SECOND ROUND
33. St. Louis- Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham *
Bradford gets a familiar weapon. Gresham is in round one minus the injury.
34. Detroit- USC DE Everson Griffen *
The Lions need help all over, and Griffen would go well with Suh.
35. Tampa Bay- Michigan DE Brandon Graham
The Bucs need a pass rushing defensive end. Graham proved it in Mobile.
36. Kansas City- LSU S Chad Jones *
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli still lands a top safety after passing on Berry.
37. Washington- California RB Javid Best *
Clinton Portis could be done in DC. Best would be in the first minus injuries.
38. Cleveland- South Florida S Nate Allen
The Browns continue to remake their secondary. Don't rule out a QB here.
39. Oakland- Illinois G Jon Asamoah
The Raiders need help inside to block. Asamoah is underrated.
40. Seattle- USC OT Charles Brown
Carroll takes a familiar player to block for Spiller.
41. Buffalo- Texas QB Colt McCoy
The Bills need a quarterback, and McCoy produced a lot in college.
42. Tampa Bay (from Chicago)- Missouri OLB Sean Weatherspoon
Weatherspoon could play middle or outside linebacker in the Tampa 2.
43. Miami- Texas OLB Sergio Kindle
Jason Taylor and Joey Porter are old. Kindle is a perfect replacement.
44. New England (from Jacksonville) - South Carolina OLB Eric Norwood
The Patriots could use a pass rusher on the edge.
45. Denver- Northwestern DT Corey Wootton
The Broncos run defense got shredded late in ‘09. Wootton helps up front.
46. New York Giants- Georgia Tech S Morgan Burnett *
After passing on a safety in round one, the Giants get a quality guy.
47. New England (from Tennessee) - Florida QB Tim Tebow
The Patriots get a quarterback to groom behind Tom Brady.
48. Carolina- Kansas WR Dezmon Briscoe *
The Panthers have struggled to find a guy to pair with Steve Smith.
49. San Francisco- Tennessee DT Dan Williams
He may go higher, but he was at best a one-year wonder for the Vols.
50. Kansas City (from Atlanta) - Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski *
The Chiefs get a young replacement for Tony Gonzalez.
51. Houston- Georgia LB Rennie Curran *
The Texans need a Will (weakside) linebacker to complete their LBs.
52. Pittsburgh- Florida G/C Maurkice Pouncey *
The Steelers continue to re-model their offensive line.
53. New England- Texas WR Jordan Shipley
The Patriots get a perfect fill-in for Wes Welker, and a long-term receiver.
54. Cincinnati- Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard
Grabbing two passing targets is possible. The Bengals like the local product.
55. Philadelphia- Utah LB Koa Misi
The Eagles have had some issues at LB. Misi had a very good Senior Bowl.
56. Green Bay- Oklahoma State CB Perrish Cox.
The Packers could use a young CB. Cox had a solid week in Mobile.
57. Baltimore- Michigan CB Donovan Warren *
Warren should have stayed in school. The Ravens need help at DB.
58. Arizona- Rutgers CB Devin McCourty
A good Senior Bowl has propelled him into the second round.
59. Dallas- Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas *
Expect Thomas' stock to blow up this spring. He is big and a blazer.
60. San Diego- USC WR Damian Williams *
There could be some contract issues for the Chargers at receiver.
61. New York Jets- Clemson OLB Ricky Sapp *
The Jets need some help in the pass rush department. Sapp is overrated.
62. Minnesota- North Carolina DT Cam Thomas
The Williams wall won't last forever. The Vikings get an understudy.
63. New Orleans- Penn State LB Navarro Bowman *
The Saints could use some help around Jonathan Vilma.
64. Indianapolis- Florida State CB Patrick Robinson
Some of the Colts defensive backs are nearing the end of their contracts.

12. Miami Dolphins- Alabama DT Terrence Cody.
* His stock has been slipping for over a month and showing up to the senior boel out of shape with giant man boobs hurt him even more. Every other sight I've seen says he will not go in the first round...so 12 seems unlikely.
17. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina)- Boise State CB Kyle Wilson
30. Minnesota Vikings- Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee
* You have these two guys going in the first round, but Patrick Robinson isn't? That is curious.

Can anyone say 2010 version of Sapp, Brooks & Rice? Sounds farfetched but so did Sapp & Brooks being HOF'ers when we first got them.
12:45pm, February 4, 2010
jtorres39
In the second:
2a: Tyson Alualo, unless Price is available
2b: Brandon Lafell, unless Tate is there
2c: Kyle Wilson, however Patrick Robinson is good to.
In the third:
3: Greg Hardy(DE) or Lamarr Houston (DT) they could use the depth and/or potential starters in both positions. Imagine having Brandon Graham on LDE (he can play both sides) and Hardy in RDE. Sounds like they could create a lot of chaos for any offensive line. Also Graham can play linebacker in the 3-4 when Morris decides to give the opposing teams that look.
4: Best Safety available: Darryl Stuckey or Rolle
5: Freddy Barnes(WR)
And make the best of it in the remaining rounds.

Defensive Corner specific Traits

Great mock. I really really really hope we get Mccoy, Graham, and Weatherspoon!!!!
Trading down & getting Berry, Price, or Spiller + another 2nd round pick would be great too.
Think of the instant upgrade our team would have if the draft worked out like this!

I'm all for trading down in this draft. I still think the Rams will take Suh if they stay put with the #1 pick. It seems clear that the Bucs don't want to make the move to trade up (too much guaranteed money) or maybe it's just a smokescreen. If that's the case, another team could trade up to get Suh and the Lions would be torn between Mccoy and Okung.
I like the Weatherspoon pick. He would give the linebacking corps versatility and he's a leader. He might not last to the second round. Same goes for Brandon Graham.
I can't remember a draft where the Bucs had so many different ways of improving the team within the first two rounds. This draft has all the makings of the 95' draft. I hope it produces a similar outcome. It's going to fun!

P.S. Say we traded our 1st, 3rd and 6th to the rams.... Wouldnt the money we would be spending on those other two picks compsensate for the salary difference between the 1st and 3rd overall? It seems Suh has a low bust potential and is a perfect example of need combined with best player available, so why ensure a GOOD pick instead of picking up one or two more maybe good players.

I think it would be better for us to invest into the front four early. We have Roy Miller, who I and others think will be good. We get Suh, and Graham in our first two picks, then we have Miller, Suh, and Graham, a nice solid, high motor, young defensive line. Maybe with the second 2nd pick get a WR for Freeman. Draft one or try to trade it for Marshall. Now I would like to see Ruud play more aggressive, however he is one of the most intelligent players on the field everytime hes on the field. He needs people in front of him to help him out, to would be insane to replace him without addressing out 2 most important needs: Defensive LINE, and Wide Receiver.
You must go to the source of the problem. It would be trying to get the water out of a sinking boat instead of repairing the hole.

If that was how the draft shook out, I would be extremely happy with those picks, but I really don't think that's the way it will go.
From what I gather, the Rams are going to attempt to address the QB position in FA so that they can draft Suh. If they can't, then I believe that they will go for Bradford.
However, I really would rather that they DO draft Suh, simply because there is no way he gets by the Lions and I believe the Lions will tag McCoy if Suh isn't there.
With Both Washington and Seattle looking for a QB, we would be in a prime position to pick up an extra 1st day pick drop to either 4th or 6th and pick up Berry or Okung. The ONLY reason that I like Berry here is that we would have an additional pick at the top of the 2nd round to address another position. My preference would actually to pick Okung. Despite the Penn love, the fact that he showed weight problems in a contract year, stayed away from OTA's and at least in my eye's had a production drop off as the year went on makes me feel that I would rather draft a player like Okung and address the LT position for the next 6-7 years or more.
I do think we can possibly get either Graham or Witherspoon at the top of the 2nd, but I really doubt that both would be there.
6:06pm, February 4, 2010

If they don't take Suh they will trade down.
I love our picks if that happens the way you predict at this time.
We need a LT unless Penn shows a weight reduction and OTA's in the next 2 months.

I think you trade back down with someone who wants a QB....I would draft Graham in the first...I think he is the next Freeny and there are several undertackles that could be there in the second that could work. I think the CB Wilson also played himself into rd 1.
The three guys I would like in the first would be Price, McCloud, Graham....with Graham being the choice...if not too high.

Every year this time, I start receiving the same five draft publications I have been getting for over twenty-five years. What I've learned is there is no validity to the early mock drafts and little validity as the draft nears.
Including the first half-dozen selections, which are easier to predict, there is maybe a 25% to 30% accuracy placing the player to the correct team in round one. I will say, the later mock drafts do a fairly good job of placing the right players in the first round who are actually selected there but not to the correct team. After that, who knows?
Pro Football Weekly's current mock draft has the Bucs selecting DE Jason Pierre Paul with our first pick. Who thinks that's right? In November, Ourlads had QB Tim Tebow rated as the 6th best senior. Anyone think he'll be drafted in the top 10?
The uncertainty is what makes the draft so much fun and reading all of the player evaluations available now makes us think we know something. Our new found expertise is why we think we know more than the real scouts and GM's who actually get paid to evaluate players they have actually met and whose play they have studied. Hey maybe we do. I know I screamed for Ronnie Lott when we passed on him for Hugh Green.
The Bucs make us religious at draft time too. I know I've yelled JC! after a few of our choices

QB - None
RB - C.J. Spiller 1st, Ryan Mathews 2nd, Toby Gerhart 3rd, Anthony Dixon 3rd
WR - Golden Tate 2nd, Taylor Price 3rd, Jeremy Williams 3rd
TE - Jimmy Graham 4th, Andrew Quarless 4th, Drake Dunsmore 6th
O-line - Anthony Davis, Bryan Bulaga, Russell Okung, Trent Williams, Bruce Cambell. All 1st rounders, but if one slips to the 2nd we should definetly grab one of these guys. No one can seem to agree who is the best of these five guys, but they are all good. Anyone of them could go top 5, and yet one of them will likely end up being there at the end of the first or possibly the early second.
DT - Ndamukong Suh 1st, Brian Price 1st, Tyson Alualu 2nd, Mike Neal 3rd.
DE - Brandon Graham 1st, Austen Lane 4th
OLB - Sean Witherspoon 2nd, Eric Norwood 3rd, Perry Riley 4th, A.J. Edds 4th.

CB - Joe Haden 1st, Donovan Warren 2nd, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah 3rd, Walter Thurmond 4th

I would like for the Bucs to pick up another 2nd round pick or a late 1st in order to add a WR or expolsive RB. Someone like CJ Spiller or Damaryius Thomas or Dexter McCluster. They have holes on offense but still they need to give Freeman all the weapons they can.

My scenarios have changed over the months but the philosophy remains the same: GET ALOT OF DRAFT PICKS
IF SUH is there, take him. I don't think there is a chance he will be so this is my best solution right now:
1. Trade down and get another 2 (their third) and another 4th
2. Round 1 take MLB Rolando McClain Alabama: Fast, strong, leader, run stuffer. I also really like Brandon Spikes
3. Round 2 take DT Brian Price UCLA: MANY DTs will be available that, in a normal year, would be round 1 talent. Not much drop from McCoy, so if Price isn't there, someone will be but they MUST take a DT here. I think Price fits the Tampa 2 best. Better motor than McCoy.
4. Trade round 2 pick for Brandon Marshall (maybe with Clayton).
5. Round 2 take WR Mardy Gilyard Cincy: I really like Brandon Lafell as well but I don't think he will be around in the 2nd round and Gilyard is more exlosive any way, possibly a poor mans DeSean Jackson.
6. Round 3 take CB Javier Arenas Alabama: He is explosive in the return game as well. Great punt returner. I love Haden but I think they can make the most of the draft by taking McClain in round 1 instead. If they took Haden, they would have to trade up for a MLB and lose a pick, but that is just because I think they NEED to get Ruud out of the middle.
7. Round 4 take an OT: I think every team should ALWAYS take an O-Lineman in the first 4 rounds every year.
8. Round 4 take a safety Wright UF: Maybe Rolle FSU or Kam Chancellor VT or Reshad Jones Georgia. They are all a good size and can hit. Basically they have a pro-bowl caliber S in TJax. The next safety along side him just needs to be good, especially with two real good CBs in front of him. At this point, almost any pick should be able to play better than Sabby did.
In this scenario they could keep Ruud for outside OR try to trade him for a 2-3 to get a DE.
I would LOVE for them to draft Graham at DE, I just think they might go after one in free agency (Merriman) I know they do not have the money but they got burnt with a DE last time so they might go after a proven commodity. Besides, Merriman could be a bargain at this point because of hardly playing the last 1.5 years.
3:52pm, February 5, 2010

So to the picks I have above, throw in TRADE RUUD for a HIGH second and land this kid if available.

Totally agree Ward is one of those players who needs to get the f off the ship. Meriman, I would love to aquire that guy, even though im no SD fan.
I just dont agree with you on Ruud though, he would be some good trade bait, but like I said, Ruud was the shit when our d-line had a backbone. The Bucs would be making a big mistake by letting him walk, plus he is a fan favorite.
Also I dont see us aqiring Marshall. It would be dumb to claim your on a "charatcer movment" and release our only WR threat(Bryant) just so you can later sign a wife-beater to a lucrative contract.

Because of money, I see them making a play for Marshall. His only issue have been griping about the regime change as far as I know. I would rather pay him than AB. AB has 2 good years in an injury riddled career. Marshall has put up awesome numbers with or without a great QB.
Anyway, just a thought. I would take Marshall and Gilyard over AB and Clayton all day!!
As far as Ruud, I just think he is OKAY and could probably be a better OLB. He was never, ever a run stuffer. I know he would be better with better DTs in front of him, but I would prefer a big time run stuffer with an attitude and leadership qualities: McClain or Spikes.
Just my opinion. If they do not do that, no big deal.
Like I keep saying, they just need to GET LOTS OF PICKS. Go for quantity. Don't put all their eggs in one basket (like trading up for Suh).
More chance of more panning out. They have too many holes too fill.
I/we can speculate all we want, and it is fun, but they have anumber of ways they could go and none would be wrong because of all the holes.

They might. The thing is, over 60 juniors have declared last I saw. This draft is very deep so alot of talent in round 2 would normally be round one talent.

Point taken.
I wouldn't mind Ruud if we had a run stuffing d-line though. He is such a splash player with a formidable d-line in front of him.
Yeah, the only way the front office could fuck this off-season up is if they tried.
We will be RAW next year.

My 2 cents- I would try to trade down and I would take McClain over McCoy. I like McCoy, but they have to hit on this pick, they just can't afford another bust and in my opinion McClain is the most sure fire pick in this draft, similar to Patrick Willis from a few years ago.
One other item - In my opinion they should draft another quaterback this year. It's a huge mistake just handing Freeman the job, but that's another discussion. They have nothing to fall back on if he gets injured right now and if you ask me, they'll be sorry if they pass on a guy like Colt McCoy in the 2nd round.

Also, there is absolutey NO reason to target a QB in round 2, no matter what you think of Freeman. Another young QB in the lab is not what we need. The front office needs to bring in a guy like Chris Redman as a backup and continue developing "No. 5".

Is it really a "huge" mistake to hand the job over to Freeman?
Ask yourself this: Is it a "huge" mistake for the Jets to hand the starting QB job over to Sanchez? Is it a "huge" mistake for the Lions to hand the starting QB job over to Stafford? NO!
You want competion at QB next year? You must have forgotten what happend last year when the Bucs were having a "healthy competion" between McCown & Suckwich.
I garantee you none of the QBs drafted this year will have half as good a season as Freeman. Im willing to say they wont even put up the numbers that Freeman had last year, and that was only over 8 games.

If that draft fell for us we would be on the road to Wellsville. We would still need a corner and a safety but the rest could be offensive players. Maybe find a few more diamonds in the rough like Sammie Strouther.
With McCoy at DT, Graham at DE and Weatherspoon at MLB, things would open up for Geno Hayes and Quincy Black a lot. Factor in Roy Miller and the Moore brothers and forget about it!!!!
